Guide on Tyre Markings

This Day about 2 hours 5 mins read

Road Safety

Sometime in 2009, I was involved in a road traffic crash. The crash occurred along the Abuja-Lokoja highway at Kwali. The cause of the crash was a tyre burst. Tyre burst is a serious road hazard and a leading cause of severe and fatal road traffic crashes on our highways. A tyre burst could lead to a complete loss of vehicle control. A blowout is dangerous no matter how good a driver you are, especially if you ignore safety precautions which the Federal Road Safety Corps preaches daily to avert such fatalities.

Fortunately, by God’s mercies, neither my in-law, nor my humble self-self-sustained any injury. And no one died in the crash. For the record, I should let you know that my in-law who was the only occupant with me had survived a fatal accident along the Keffi Akwanga road where he was partially crippled for months. My mission on that fateful day was to take him home to Amasiri, my beautiful village in Afikpo local government area of Ebonyi State to douse the parents’ fear that he didn’t survive the crash. It was also to announce my enlistment into the services of the Corps barely three years before the incident.

When the crash occurred, I did what all believers do when they are in trouble. I prayed. I called on God for help. And I believed that God, who answers prayers would answer me and save us. And indeed, He did. But beyond all the prayers, I relied on my skills which I shared daily with applicants for driver’s license who were compelled to attend a compulsory one to two hours class to raise awareness on safe driving as a precondition for obtaining a driver’s license. So, when the blowout occurred, I mentally reeled out all my lecture notes by ensuring the blowout was managed although the real skill started, prior to the blowout.

So, what were those skills? First, I ensured my speed was appropriate to the approved speed for cars which was and is still, one hundred kilometers per hour on the highway for cars. Secondly, lane discipline was duly complied with while ensuring that nothing distracted my driving even before the blowout. And when the blowout occurred, I refrained from applying my brakes for any reason. In fact, I raised my two legs to ensure I was not tempted by anything, including the devil to apply my brakes. An applause from on-lookers and drivers was my reward for being professional and averting another crash, maybe another death.

I have chosen this story that is over fifteen years old to whet your appetite on the value of tyres. And the need to update your knowledge of tyres even if you are yet to own your own car. How conversant are you with tyre markings? Standard or expired? Do you ever border on tyre markings before or after buying a new tyre? I am talking about specifics such as tyre size, speed ratings, load index among others. I know a lot of materials have been published on tyres. However, this week I wish to take you through the practical importance of understanding these specifications using real examples to explain what the markings mean, why they are important for safety, performance and proper tyre selection.

I don’t know if you have time for your tires. I plead with you to spare time and study your tyres, especially the sidewalls. Whenever you look at the sidewall of your tyre, you will see a seemingly cryptic combination of letters and numbers that might appear confusing at first glance. However, these markings contain crucial information about your tyre’s capabilities, specifications, and performance characteristics.

Do tyre markings really matter? Truth is that understanding tire markings empowers you to make informed decisions about tire selection, maintenance, and safety. Mismatched tire specifications can compromise vehicle handling, fuel efficiency, and safety. Speed-rated tyres that are too low can overheat and fail, while load-indexed tyres that are insufficient can cause accelerated wear and potential failure.

By taking a moment to decipher the letters and numbers on your tyre’s sidewall, you are ensuring that your vehicle is equipped with tires that safely match its capabilities and your driving needs. Whether you are shopping for replacements or simply curious about what your current tires can handle, understanding these markings is an essential part of responsible vehicle ownership.

For emphasis, understanding what these letters and numbers mean is essential for safe driving, proper vehicle maintenance, and ensuring your tyres match your vehicle’s requirements.

Let me start with the basic tyre size code. The most prominent marking on a tyre sidewall typically looks something like “P215/65R15 95H.” This alphanumeric sequence is standardized internationally and provides fundamental information about the tyre’s dimensions and load-carrying capacity.

The “P” at the beginning indicates the tire’s class—in this case, “P” stands for “passenger vehicle.” Other common designations include “LT” for light truck tires and “T” for temporary spare tires. The first three digits (215 in our example) represent the tyre’s width in millimeters. The two digits following the slash (65) indicate the aspect ratio, which is the height of the sidewall expressed as a percentage of the width. So, a 65-aspect ratio means the tyre’s sidewall height is 65% or its 215mm width. The letter “R” denotes the tyre’s construction type—in this case, radial construction, which is the standard for modern passenger vehicles. The final two-digit number (15) represents the wheel diameter in inches, indicating the tyre is designed to fit a 15-inch diameter wheel.

The next is the speed rating. One of the most important letters on a tyre’s sidewall is the speed rating, which typically appears at the very end of the tyre code. In our example, the “H” is the speed rating. This single letter has profound implications for your vehicle’s performance and safety. Speed ratings use a standardized letter system that indicates the maximum speed at which a tyre can safely carry a load for an extended period.
