He immediately briefed the Commissioner of Police, who directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The police said, “Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased and a colleague formed part of the medical team attached to the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, and had accompanied him to his hometown in Uburu, where she died in a room within the compound of his residence.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It added, “The command has since commenced a comprehensive investigation. Detectives have visited the scene and obtained statements from relevant persons. The command is set to engage the services of a pathologist to conduct a post-mortem examination that will help determine the cause of death and support the ongoing inquiry.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The police spokesman stated that though the family of the deceased had claimed that they did not want any autopsy performed on their daughter, the command considered the examination necessary, given the sensitive nature of the case and the imperative of establishing the true cause of death.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Meanwhile, Umahi yesterday personally addressed the circumstances surrounding the death of Habila, describing her as a “daughter” and dismissing allegations linking him or his office to the incident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Addressing journalists at a press conference in Abuja, Umahi said Habila, a nurse employed by the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital, Uburu, had lived with his family for about three years and had been battling an underlying medical condition for which he personally funded her treatment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated, “The lady in question was like a daughter to me. She stayed with me for three years. She was a staff of the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital, Uburu. She was a nurse, not a physiotherapist, and her family and my family are like one.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Umahi disclosed that Habila had been receiving treatment at Turkish Hospital, with the latest medical bill amounting to about N2.2 million, which he said was paid by him.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the minister, available evidence indicated that the deceased had spoken with her boyfriend shortly before her death, complaining of persistent nose bleeding.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“She called her boyfriend at the hour of her death and complained that she was bleeding from the nose. He advised her to report it, but she said she didn’t want to disturb me. Three minutes after he ended the call and tried calling back, she was no longer responding.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He explained that Habila was later found dead after colleagues forced open the door to her room, which had been locked from the inside.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Umahi added that the bathroom tap was still running when the door was broken, suggesting she had intended to take a bath before the incident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Rejecting claims of foul play, the minister said there was no evidence linking anyone to her death and condemned attempts to politicise what he described as a painful personal loss.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated, “It is very painful to me that the girl passed on. Everything has become politics in this country. People should be careful when they use the unfortunate death of a young girl to play politics.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The minister also disclosed that he had requested the Inspector-General of Police to transfer the investigation to Abuja to guarantee transparency and public confidence in the process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>APM Tells Tinubu to Suspend Minister\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Allied People’s Movement (APM) demanded that President Bola Tinubu should save the image of the country and the integrity of the Nigerian government by immediately suspending Umahi and ordering an open, independent, and transparent inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Habila.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a statement by National Publicity Secretary of APM, Abubakar Yusuf, the party said, ‘’Our party holds that the continued stay of Engr. Umahi in the federal cabinet and the silence of the presidency, despite the minister’s alleged connection with the gruesome incident, cast a huge blight on the nation and further confirms the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration as insensitive and one that has no iota of regard for the lives of Nigerians especially women and youths.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’It also risks eroding public confidence in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to justice, accountability and the sanctity of human life.’’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said APM’s demand came amid rising public apprehension and suspicion of foul play and desperation to conceal a crime particularly with conflicting claims and reports regarding Habila’s arrival to Umahi’s house, the circumstances of her death in the house, and alleged pressure on the family to bury her without autopsy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The statement said, ‘’The APM, as the voice of Nigerians, seeks an independent inquest into the incident especially against the backdrop of reports in the media space that Mary was brought from Kaduna State to the minister’s residence in Ebonyi State by an aide of the minister alongside another young lady on June 26, 2026 and was found dead the following morning.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’Our party seeks an inquest that answers critical questions in the minds of Nigerians. particularly those in high public office, to exercise due diligence before presenting or associating individuals with regulated professions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>NSP said information released to the public should be accurate and verifiable, stressing that professional identity is determined through established regulatory processes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It stated, “The Nigeria State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The lawyers explained that the deceased did not reside in the same building as the minister. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They said the building was designated for members of Umahi’s staff and other personnel working with him.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They further stated that on the night of her death, only Habila and another female occupant, identified as a physiotherapist, were in the building.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The legal team urged the police to ensure that a comprehensive autopsy is conducted by qualified forensic pathologists to scientifically determine the actual cause and circumstances of Habila’s death.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They also requested that Habila’s remains should not be released to anyone, including her next of kin, until the autopsy and all other relevant investigative procedures have been completed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the lawyers, the request is aimed at preserving the Lawal, arrested one Ashiru Idris, 28, following the circulation on social media of a video showing him publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1, Kano, convicted Idris and ordered that the seven-year prison sentence should take effect from July 14, 2026.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The agency described the judgment as a strong warning to people who publicly promote or engage in illegal drug activities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Reacting to the ruling, the Kano State Commander, CN Lawal, said: “This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. Parents woke every morning hoping for news of children who had disappeared into captivity. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nights brought little comfort, only another round of questions about whether the abducted pupils and their teachers were alive, safe or even coming home. When the announcement finally came that the victims had been rescued, celebrations erupted across the community, and, indeed, Nigeria \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Yet beyond the jubilation lies a more profound story, one that raises uncomfortable questions about Nigeria’s security architecture, the protection of schools, the welfare of frontline troops and the resilience of communities determined not to surrender to fear.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>An end to an ordeal\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The rescue brought an end to a painful chapter for the affected families, but it also exposed the enormous social cost of insecurity in rural Nigeria. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It demonstrated how a single criminal act can paralyse an entire community, disrupt education, weaken economic activities and leave emotional scars that outlive the crisis itself. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The voices of parents, community leaders, residents and security personnel revealed that while the children have returned, the underlying conditions that made the abduction possible remain a source of deep concern.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>No one captured the emotional burden of the 56-day ordeal more poignantly than one of the mothers, Mrs Kadijat, whose children were among those rescued. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For nearly two months, hope and despair competed for space in her heart. The announcement of the rescue was, for her, an answer to countless prayers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The first thing I did was thank Almighty God. I also appreciate those who worked tirelessly on this. May God continue to bless their efforts and grant them success. They will not labour in vain. I am so happy that it turned out this way.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her gratitude was directed both at God and at those involved in securing the children’s freedom. Yet beneath her words lay the emotional exhaustion that accompanies prolonged uncertainty.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“It felt like a heavy burden on me. But now my mind has become deeply at ease. All the children had fled into the bush. Everything we did was in fear and anxiety.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He added that even the simplest routines had become difficult because people’s thoughts were consumed by uncertainty.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“But when we heard they had returned, we were exceedingly joyful. Our sleep returned to normal.
