‘He chose democracy over dictatorship’ — Tinubu hails Akinrinade at 87

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Chief of Army Staff, General Alani Ipoola Akinrinade (retd), on his 87th birthday, describing him as a towering statesman, gallant soldier and principled patriot who devoted his life to Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Akinrinade’s legacy remained “etched in gold” in Nigeria’s history, spanning his distinguished military career and his role in the pro-democracy struggle.

Akinrinade, a civil war veteran, served as Chief of Army Staff and later Chief of Defence Staff before retiring from the military.

He was also a leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the campaign for the restoration of the June 12 mandate and the return of democratic rule.

“General Akinrinade stood on the right side of history. When it was dangerous to do so, he chose democracy over dictatorship, the people over power,” President Tinubu said.

“He is one of the heroes who made the Fourth Republic possible. Nigeria will forever be grateful for his courage and sacrifice.”

The President commended the retired General for continuing to serve the country as an elder statesman, describing him as “a voice of wisdom, moderation, and unwavering commitment to national unity.”

On behalf of the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, Tinubu prayed for robust health, peace of mind and many more years of impactful life for Akinrinade.
