NNEWI — A one-storey commercial building containing eight shops at Ikenga Ogidi, near the Building Materials International Market along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State, has collapsed following heavy rainfall.
No casualties were reported, as occupants had reportedly closed for business before the incident occurred. However, residents and traders said the collapse caused extensive damage to goods and property within the building and surrounding area.
The incident also reportedly affected nearby structures, with floodwaters damaging fences and other property in the neighbourhood.
When visited by journalists, residents said concerns had previously been raised about drainage challenges in the area and the impact of flooding during heavy rains.
Some residents attributed the collapse to erosion and flooding associated with the downpour, while also calling for improved drainage management and stricter enforcement of building regulations.
They urged the Anambra State Government and relevant federal authorities to assess the area and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities had not released an official assessment of the cause of the collapse at the time of filing this report. Investigations are expected to determine the factors that contributed to the incident.
