How bus driver nearly landed in jail after accepting ‘energy drink’ parcel

A commercial bus driver nearly landed in jail after accepting a bottle of energy drink as a waybill package in Lagos for delivery to Ondo State, only for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to discover that it contained illicit drugs.

NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the bottle was used to conceal Colos and methamphetamine.

The driver, who was unaware of the contents, spent some time in custody before operatives traced and arrested the person who gave him the package.

Babafemi said the driver was fortunate that the person behind the package was identified, warning that others may not be as lucky.

“He may be lucky to have escaped gaol because officers who made the discovery were able to track and arrest the person who gave him the package, your own case may be devoid of such luck and you go in for it,” he said.

The NDLEA spokesman urged commercial drivers and other transport workers to avoid accepting parcels whose contents they cannot verify, stressing that possession of illicit drugs can make the person carrying them legally liable.

“As drivers or whoever, please avoid taking parcels you don’t know its content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law and you go explain tire!” Babafemi added.
