warned that awareness campaigns alone would not protect young people from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, suicide risk and the growing psychological pressures associated with social media, insecurity, and other social challenges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experts, who spoke at the 4th Vanguard mental health summit on Friday in Lagos, stressed that government, health professionals, schools, families, religious institutions, the media and technology platforms must share responsibility for protecting young people’s mental well-being.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They urged the Federal Government and state governments to move beyond policy declarations to full implementation of the Mental Health Act, adequate funding of mental health services, integration of care into primary healthcare and the establishment of accessible counselling and referral systems in schools.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his presentation titled: “Making Youth Mental Health Everyone’s Business: From Policy to Practice”, President of the Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA) Prof. Ernest Omoti, represented by the association’s Financial Secretary, and also a professor of psychiatry, Prof. Olayinka Atilola, said youth mental health must become everyone’s business, with practical action replacing isolated interventions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atilola called for the implementation and funding of the Mental Health Act, the National Mental Health Policy and the National Suicide Prevention Strategic Framework, alongside the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omoti also stressed the need to train a multidisciplinary mental health workforce and establish counselling and referral systems in schools and universities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families, religious leaders, community organisations and the media, he said, had important roles to play in reducing stigma, identifying distress early and ensuring that young people receive appropriate support.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged people to listen to young people without rushing to judge them, stressing: “Listen before you label.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NMA president also called for responsible media reporting of suicide and greater participation of young people in decisions affecting their mental health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-mental-health-act-experts-demand-implementation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental Health Act: Experts demand implementation\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major concern raised at the summit was the gap between Nigeria’s mental health policies and their implementation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Professor of Psychiatry, Prof. Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, argued that mental health should be treated as an essential component of national development rather than a marginal health issue.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for the effective implementation of the Mental Health Act, including measures to decriminalise attempted suicide, expand community-based services and improve access to treatment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheikh said the country must recognise the wider social consequences of untreated mental health conditions, particularly the effects of conflict, insecurity, displacement and trauma on individuals, families and communities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also advocated investment in what he described as “psychological infrastructure”, arguing that the country’s development priorities should extend beyond physical infrastructure to include the emotional and psychological well-being of its people.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, restoring mental well-being, trust and social cohesion is important to national progress, while mental health has value beyond its contribution to economic productivity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking, President of the Association of Psychiatric Association of Nigeria, (APN), Dr. Nyamali Veronica Oluyemisi, also called for urgent implementation of the Mental Health Act.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She urged the government to establish the department and Mental Health Fund provided for under the law and ensure that mental health services receive dedicated, sustained funding.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nyamali further called on state governments to domesticate and implement relevant provisions of the Act, while integrating mental health services into primary healthcare and community-based care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She advocated the training and deployment of mental health focal persons in secondary and tertiary schools to identify students experiencing psychological distress and link them with appropriate services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The APN president also called for wider access to affordable treatment, the use of telehealth where appropriate, stronger public education and measurable targets against which progress could be assessed before the next summit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-social-media-new-pressure-on-young-minds\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social media, new pressure on young minds\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experts also warned that the digital environment had created additional challenges for young people, requiring coordinated action from parents, schools, health professionals, technology platforms and policymakers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking, a professor of Psychiatry, Professor Mashudat Abiola Bello-Mojeed, who spoke on protecting young minds in the age of social media, highlighted concerns around cyberbullying, online exploitation, misinformation, unhealthy social comparison and pressures linked to body image and sleep disruption.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She called for stronger national coordination to address online harms and urged schools to establish clear safeguarding policies, reporting channels and counselling support for students affected by cyberbullying.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bello-Mojeed cautioned against relying solely on blanket restrictions, stressing the importance of building trust between parents and young people while equipping children with digital literacy and the ability to recognise harmful online experiences.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also called for greater accountability in the digital environment and urged clinicians to consider young people’s online experiences when assessing their mental health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her recommendations included the SAFE-MIND framework as part of a broader approach to protecting young people in an increasingly digital world.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-drug-abuse-mental-health-linked\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drug abuse, mental health-linked\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), warned that substance abuse and mental health problems frequently reinforce each other, making prevention, treatment and rehabilitation as important as enforcement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Represented by the Assistant Comptroller General, Archie- Abia Ibinabo, said the human distress behind drug abuse must not be ignored in efforts to address the problem.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Behind almost every case of drug abuse is a story of pain: anxiety nobody noticed, depression nobody named, trauma nobody treated,” Marwa said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged stakeholders to reach young people with appropriate information, support and treatment before substance use develops into more serious problems.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We must meet young people where they are,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marwa disclosed that the NDLEA had counselled, treated and rehabilitated 53,843 people through its 31 rehabilitation centres, while its War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, initiative had conducted 17,213 outreach activities in five years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for stronger community-based prevention, early intervention in schools, affordable treatment outside major cities and the integration of mental health support into primary healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marwa also urged stakeholders to challenge the online glamorisation of drugs and reduce the stigma that often prevents people with substance-use and mental health problems from seeking help.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that a comprehensive response must combine law enforcement with prevention, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-affordable-care-confidentiality-essential\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Affordable care, confidentiality essential\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Controller of Corrections, Mr. Daramola George, represented by Mr. Ajayi Francis Akinlou, also called for accessible, quality and confidential mental health services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasised the need to strengthen community and primary healthcare services, provide young people with reliable, age-appropriate digital information and protect their privacy when they seek help.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also urged the media to report suicide and self-harm responsibly, while encouraging young people to participate in developing policies and programmes intended to address their needs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that discussions about mental health must lead to concrete interventions rather than end with expressions of concern.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-treatment-options-and-early-intervention\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment options and early intervention\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, a UK-based consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Olufemi Oluwatayo highlighted the importance of recognising mental health conditions early and ensuring that young people receive appropriate, evidence-based care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He identified depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder among conditions that may affect young people, noting that treatment should be tailored to the individual and may include psychotherapy, medication or a combination of interventions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oluwatayo also discussed transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS, as a possible treatment option for selected patients with depression who have not responded adequately to established treatments.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citing the BRIGhTMIND trial involving 255 patients with treatment-resistant depression, he said the treatment involved 20 sessions over four to six weeks.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he stressed that TMS should not be presented as a universal solution for mental health conditions. The scale of the problem calls for coordinated action involving healthcare providers, families, communities, and the justice system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For young people whose substance use is linked to offending, the consequences can extend beyond legal penalties to their health, education, family relationships and employment prospects. Untreated dependence may compound these difficulties and make rehabilitation more challenging.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key priority is early identification and professional assessment to determine the appropriate intervention. Not every young person who uses drugs is dependent, making individual assessment essential.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police officers, prosecutors, judges and correctional personnel also need training to recognise possible substance use disorders and facilitate referrals for treatment. Where legally appropriate, treatment based alternatives may complement conventional justice measures without compromising accountability or public safety.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rehabilitation must continue beyond formal treatment. Follow up care, counselling, family support and opportunities to return to education or employment can help young people sustain recovery and rebuild their lives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Government agencies responsible for health, justice, education and drug control need to coordinate their efforts, expand access to qualified treatment providers and ensure continuity of care. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools, families and youth organisations also have a role in identifying warning signs and directing young people to professional help early.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sustained funding, trained personnel and accessible treatment facilities are essential. It suggests courage and a willingness to attempt something that seems unreasonable. So, I want to begin with the circumstances that made our choices in Enugu necessary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nigeria is one of the youngest countries in the world. Almost two-thirds of our population is under 30. In that fact lies an extraordinary possibility. This generation could become the greatest engine of growth, creativity and productivity Nigeria has ever known. But there is another possibility. That youth bulge, as I have said before, can become a demographic dividend. Or it can become a demographic catastrophe. And we should be clear about what will determine the difference.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Today, the Nigerian statistics in relation to the world’s out-of-school children is unflattering. Equally worrying is a recent UNICEF report arising from proficiency tests in basic subjects for children at Junior Secondary 2. The report shows that pupils are, more or less, merely going through the motions of learning – without actually imbibing any knowledge.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Think about that. We are not simply dealing with an access crisis. We are dealing with a learning crisis. And it is playing out against a world in which knowledge is becoming more valuable by the day; in which technology is transforming work before our eyes; in which the countries that prosper will increasingly be those capable of creating, applying and adapting knowledge. That is the world into which this enormous generation of young Nigerians is coming.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So, when we talk about transforming education, we are not having an abstract conversation about schools. We are talking about the future productive capacity of this country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When we came into government in Enugu, we had to look at that reality very closely. We could have repaired the existing system. We could have renovated some classrooms, supplied some desks, put computers into a few schools and called it reform. But we had to ask ourselves a more difficult question: would it be enough? Would an education system essentially designed for the world of 40 years ago prepare an Enugu child for the world of 20 years from now? Our answer was “no.” And once we accepted that, the scale of our response had to change. This is where the idea of audacity begins to acquire some meaning. We did not decide simply to improve the old classroom.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We decided to rethink the nature of education in Enugu entirely. We committed ourselves to building 260 Smart Green Schools, one in every ward of Enugu State. So far, that’s more than 7,000 classrooms built.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And we deliberately took them beyond the urban centres, into communities where children had too often inherited the quality of education that geography and circumstance happened to give them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We moved from rote learning towards experiential learning; from memorising the answer towards understanding the problem; towards collaboration, critical thinking, digital capability and the practical application of knowledge.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We put our money behind that conviction. For three successive budget cycles, approximately one-third of our state budget has gone to education. This is an extraordinary commitment of public resources.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But it came from an equally strong conviction: if we are serious about ending poverty, we have to get to its roots. For us, one of those roots is lack of knowledge; lack of know-how; lack of the capabilities through which people create wealth, find employment, build enterprises, participate intelligently in society and determine the direction of their own lives. And the brutal calculation we made was that whatever education costs us today, ignorance will cost us far more tomorrow.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, none of this exists in isolation. A child cannot flourish in a school surrounded by a failing society. So, while we were transforming education, we were also confronting insecurity, rebuilding roads, expanding healthcare, restoring water, modernising transport and creating the conditions in which investment could return.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Over 1,500 kilometres of roads have now been constructed or reconstructed. Across the same 260 wards in which we have placed our Smart Green Schools, we have been building 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And critically, we have had to find the resources to sustain that scale of ambition. In 2022, before our administration came into office, Enugu State generated approximately N27 billion internally. In 2025, our internally-generated revenue exceeded N400 billion. While tax revenue accounted for N51.5bn or 12.6 per cent, N355.2bn or 87.4 per cent of the total sum came from non-tax revenue, mainly from our investments and the revival, optimisation, and monetisation of our hitherto moribund assets.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Again, this remarkable income growth has not occurred in isolation. We must recognize and compliment the Federal Government’s macroeconomic adjustments and reforms that have created fiscal strength, improved public financing and external buffers. The result is adequate fiscal capacity at the sub-national level.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The point here is straightforward: Transformation cannot survive on aspiration alone. Eventually somebody has to pay for it. What we have attempted in Enugu is therefore not a collection of education projects. It is a change in the entire development model – a quantum leap.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are moments when incremental improvement is responsible. There are other moments when incremental improvement simply preserves the distance between where you are and where the world is going. We concluded that education in Enugu had reached such a moment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But let me also say this: building schools is the visible part. Changing an education system is much harder. That’s because, ultimately, a school is only as transformative as what happens between a teacher and a child. And no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers. That may be the single greatest challenge in everything we are attempting.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We are asking teachers who themselves grew up within a particular educational tradition to help us create a different one. For decades, the dominant method was familiar: the teacher stood at the front; knowledge travelled in one direction; children copied, repeated, memorized and reproduced.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now we are asking something very different of both teacher and learner.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> This is a profound cultural change that requires us to build the human capacity to sustain it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That is why teacher development, continuous professional learning and the work of the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation are so important to us. The buildings may be new. But unless the culture of learning changes with them, we will simply have recreated the old system inside more beautiful walls.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Occasionally, however, something happens that allows you to glimpse what all this might become. I had one of those moments recently. Let me share a riveting story:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There is a young boy at our Smart Green School in Owo. He has been there for about two years. Owo is not in metropolitan Enugu. It is the sort of community where, until very recently, a child could have gone through most of his basic education without meaningful contact with a computer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> This boy was recently invited to help train students from other schools. I watched the video. He was standing in front of boys from schools in the city, encouraging them as much as teaching them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In barely two years, he had learned to use technology confidently, build websites, work with digital platforms and understand how Artificial Intelligence could make him more productive. Now he was passing that confidence on, sort of prodding his audience: “you can do this too. Believe in what you are capable of.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I had goosebumps watching him. Here was a young boy from Owo, from a community where this kind of access would once have been unimaginable, now showing students from the city what was possible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Education had not simply given him digital skills. It had changed his sense of his own possibility – and already he was enlarging the possibilities for others. That, for me, is the transformation in action. We must judge the system by what our children know, what they can do, and who they become.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And perhaps it also answers something about what we mean by inclusion. The talent was always there; The intelligence was always there. What was missing was access.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Yet, Distinguished guests, evident transformations do not necessarily erase doubts. I understand such doubts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you live in a community where the road is poor, where you need running water, where your immediate concern is feeding your family, a Smart Green School can sound like an elitist luxury.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you are a teacher who has worked in one way for twenty years, transformation can sound suspiciously like somebody telling you that everything you know is obsolete.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And if you are responsible for public finances, committing one-third of a state budget to education raises a perfectly reasonable question: can we afford this?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I would turn that question around: can we afford not to? If we fix the road today but fail to educate the child who will maintain it tomorrow, how sustainable was our investment in the road? If we build factories but lack the skilled people capable of running increasingly sophisticated production systems, where is our own Industrial Revolution going to come from?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If Nigeria is to become a creation economy rather than a consumption economy — a knowledge economy able to compete, collaborate and contribute to the world — then we must equip our young people not simply to use what the world creates, but to research, design, engineer and create what the world needs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And if millions of young people reach adulthood without the knowledge and capabilities to participate meaningfully in the economy, what exactly do we imagine the social cost of that will be?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> I have never regarded our investment in education as discretionary spending. It is preventative investment in the future stability and prosperity of our society.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There is also something that’s unusual – politically – about education. Much of what governments build can be commissioned within a term of office. Education does not give you that satisfaction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some of the three-year-olds entering our schools today will not reach the height of their productive lives for another 20 years. I will not be Governor then. Most of us sitting in this hall will never know the full return on the investments we are making now.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I described this recently as a labour of love. We are investing enormous resources belonging to the people in outcomes that may fully reveal themselves only after you have left government.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But that is precisely what leadership sometimes requires. Our responsibility cannot end at the boundary of our tenure. A child’s education lasts far longer than the tenure of a governor or commissioner.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So, I return to the title of this address: “The Audacity of Enugu’s Education Transformation.” Yes. The turn should be that audacity and necessity are not opposites. The deeper you understand the necessity, the more audacious the response has to become.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I’d reshape it like this: yes, perhaps it took some audacity to commit a third of our budget to education. Perhaps it took audacity to attempt 260 Smart Green Schools simultaneously across every ward.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Perhaps it takes audacity to ask an entire education system—government, teachers, parents and children—to step beyond familiar methods and embrace something fundamentally different.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But audacity does not mean acting recklessly. Sometimes it means having the courage to recognise what is necessary — and then acting at the scale that necessity demands.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Because what was the alternative? Nigeria has one of the largest populations of young people on earth. We have enormous ambitions to become a creation economy rather than a consumption economy; a knowledge economy able to compete, collaborate and contribute to the world.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We want to eradicate poverty, create wealth, and enable our young people to build meaningful futures here. How do we achieve any of those things without the knowledge base to research, design, produce and create? That is the connection we must make. And once we make it, audacity becomes necessity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I believe Nigeria has reached the point where we must treat education as a national emergency. Not rhetorically, but in our budgets, our teacher development, our infrastructure, the standards we demand, and the partnerships we build between the Federal Government, states, development agencies, communities and the private sector.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our future prosperity depends upon the knowledge and capabilities of our people, after all. And that means every Nigerian child, wherever they are born, must have access to an education capable of preparing them for the world they are entering.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Once we understand that, the question changes. It is no longer: can we afford to make this quantum leap? It becomes: What will happen to us if we do not?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our demographic dividend could be extraordinary. But that future will not simply arrive. We have to build it. And if Enugu’s experience offers one lesson, I hope it is this: when the scale of the challenge demands a quantum leap, audacity is not a luxury.
