KAMPALA — Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba has launched the Uganda Police Force Block-Making Project, a strategic initiative aimed at improving accommodation and welfare for police personnel.
The project will strengthen the Force’s capacity to produce construction materials in-house, beginning with the manufacture of building blocks for police infrastructure. The initiative is expected to reduce construction costs and support the development of durable accommodation and other facilities across the country.
In the long term, the project will be expanded nationwide to support the construction and renovation of police housing, offices and other essential infrastructure, addressing longstanding accommodation challenges faced by officers.
As part of the launch, IGP Byakagaba also laid a foundation stone for the construction of improved housing facilities at Nsambya Police Barracks, marking the start of efforts to transform the barracks into a more conducive living environment for police personnel and their families.
Addressing officers, the IGP emphasised that the initiative is primarily intended to enhance their welfare and living conditions, noting that decent and conducive accommodation is essential to officers’ wellbeing, morale and ability to effectively serve the public.
The IGP was accompanied by members of the Police Top Advisory Committee (PAC), including Deputy Inspector General of Police James Ocaya, as well as various directors.
The team also toured Nsambya Police Barracks to assess the existing accommodation facilities and engage officers and their spouses on the challenges affecting their living conditions.
Following the assessment, the IGP pledged immediate interventions to address the most pressing accommodation and welfare concerns, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to improving the working and living conditions of its personnel.
