The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Saturday said the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, has intensified efforts to secure the safe release of worshippers abducted in Dekara, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The IGP stated this on Saturday during a visit to the Niger State Police Command, where he reviewed the security situation in the state, assessed ongoing operations and provided additional operational support to the Command.
Disu said the visit was aimed at strengthening ongoing efforts to rescue the abducted worshippers, while identifying practical measures to address the operational challenges confronting security personnel in the state.
He condemned the abduction of the worshippers, stressing that the nation remains deeply concerned about the safe and speedy release of the victims.
The IGP disclosed that the police had deployed tactical and counter-terrorism teams, the Special Intervention Squad and Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel as part of efforts to rescue the victims and restore security in the affected communities.
He said attacks on innocent citizens have far-reaching consequences, not only for the safety and security of the people, but also for economic activities and development in Niger State and the country at large.
Disu charged officers and men of the Niger State Command to remain vigilant, proactive and professionally committed to their duties.
He also urged the Command to strengthen community engagement and intelligence gathering, stressing the need for credible information capable of preventing attacks to be transmitted promptly to the appropriate operational authorities.
The IGP commended officers and men of the Command for their sacrifices and continued efforts to protect lives and property across the state.
On the proposed establishment of state police, Disu said the development would not disrupt ongoing security operations, but could strengthen the capacity and efficiency of security personnel in the discharge of their responsibilities.
He maintained that the Nigeria Police Force remains the primary policing institution in the country, with a critical responsibility for maintaining internal security.
The IGP also acknowledged the sacrifices of police officers, noting that their courage, resilience and commitment to duty remain essential to the collective efforts to secure Niger State and the country.
The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, expressed appreciation to the IGP for the support and assurances provided to the Command.
The IGP had earlier visited the Niger State Government House, where he was briefed on the security situation in the state by the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba.
Bandits on August 22, 2026, invaded Dekara community, abducting an unspecified number of residents shortly after they attended Friday (Juma’at) prayers.
The attack occurred between about 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., as the armed men stormed the community and allegedly rounded up the victims who had gathered at the mosque for the congregational prayer.
