The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has pledged stronger police action against recent killings in Plateau State, while calling for a secure environment to enable Nigeria’s creative economy to thrive.
Disu made the remarks on Wednesday at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, Plateau State, where he delivered a lecture to participants of Senior Executive Course 48, 2026.
The lecture, titled “The Orange Economy and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Role of the Nigeria Police Force,” focused on the relationship between security, entrepreneurship, intellectual property and the growth of Nigeria’s creative industries.
The IGP said the Police has an important role to play in protecting the intellectual property, businesses and digital platforms that drive the Orange Economy, noting that Nigeria’s creative products, including music, fashion, film and food, are consumed across the world.
According to him, the sector can contribute significantly to employment, investment and national development if creators and their businesses are adequately protected from criminal activities.
Disu also proposed the establishment of an Orange Economy Security and Intellectual Property Coordination Desk within an appropriate existing structure of the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the proposed desk would facilitate specialised policing, inter-agency collaboration, dedicated reporting mechanisms and stronger engagement with stakeholders in the creative sector.
The IGP advocated an intelligence-led and partnership-based approach to tackling organised piracy, counterfeiting, cyber-enabled fraud and other crimes affecting creative enterprises.
He further called for stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Copyright Commission and other relevant institutions, alongside improved cybercrime response and preservation of digital evidence.
Disu also stressed the importance of securing Nigeria’s night-time economy, urging state governments to ensure adequate security for businesses operating at night so they can contribute to economic development.
He said providing young Nigerians with legitimate opportunities to transform their talents into lawful income and employment could also reduce their vulnerability to criminal activity.
Shortly after the NIPSS engagement, the IGP paid a courtesy visit to the Plateau State Government House in Jos, where he met with Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo to discuss the security situation in the state, particularly the recent killings in Mangu.
Disu said he was in Plateau to engage the Commissioner of Police, officers of the command and other stakeholders towards addressing the attacks.
He disclosed that some arrests had been made in connection with the violence, attributing the progress partly to increased confidence among residents to provide information to the Police.
“We are not happy about this situation. Some arrests have been made because of the efforts we have put in. We are going to find a lasting solution to this,” the IGP said.
He pledged closer collaboration with the Plateau State Government and other stakeholders, stressing that the Police would continue to work towards improving security and protecting residents.
Receiving the IGP on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo welcomed the Police chief to the state and said his visit demonstrated his concern for the security of Plateau residents.
Piyo commended the new Commissioner of Police for his efforts towards restoring peace, while also highlighting steps taken by the state government to strengthen security, including the establishment of a control centre in Jos.
She, however, appealed to the IGP to reactivate the Mobile Police barracks in Gashish and increase deployment to Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos.
According to her, increased police presence in the affected areas would help reassure residents and strengthen ongoing efforts to curb insecurity.
The IGP’s visit combined discussions on the security challenges confronting Plateau State with broader national efforts to position policing as a key component in protecting Nigeria’s emerging creative economy.
