Former Osun State Governor and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, has condemned the violence in Ikire, headquarters of Irewole Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed two lives.
Oyetola called on the police and other security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the killings and other acts of violence in the area.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Dr Bolaji Akinola, the minister also condemned what he described as escalating post-election violence in parts of the state.
Oyetola described the attacks as a threat to the peace and democratic values of Osun State, stressing that no political ambition or commercial interest could justify the loss of human lives.
“Politics must be a vehicle for development, not a catalyst for bloodshed,” Akinola quoted Oyetola as saying.
The minister expressed condolences to the families of those killed and urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of further escalating tensions.
He called on the Osun State Police Command and other security agencies to take decisive measures to restore order and protect residents, particularly in areas affected by the unrest.
Oyetola also urged security agencies to deploy adequate personnel to volatile locations, reclaim public spaces from hoodlums and ensure that those responsible for the killings and other acts of violence were apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He appealed to residents across the state to prioritise peace and restraint, warning that the development and prosperity of Osun should not be undermined by political or commercial interests.
Oyetola reaffirmed his commitment to the peace, security and development of the state, urging citizens to work together to preserve Osun’s reputation for civility, enterprise and democratic values.
