Social Democratic Party, SDP, presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has condemned the attack on Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, supporters in Enugu State, describing the incident as a direct attack on Nigeria’s democracy.
The candidate spoke in a statement by Mark Adebayo, Head of Media and Communications Directorate of the Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign on Sunday in Abuja.
Adebayo expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “I’m saddened by the news of the shootings at the supporters of NDC whose only crime was to go to the airport to welcome their governorship candidate.”
He criticised security agencies for selective protection, demanding that the police and Department of State Services, DSS, act with absolute impartiality, ensuring all political parties, citizens and candidates were protected irrespective of their political affiliations.
Adebayo stressed that taxpayers funded security forces to protect every citizen and warned that looking away while opposition members were targeted is an intolerable trend.
“The targeted attacks on opposition members while security forces look away is a dangerous trend that must stop immediately.
“We demand a full-scale unbiased investigation into the Enugu killings and the perpetrators must be brought to swift justice,” he said.
The presidential candidate urged Nigerians to remain courageous against structural oppression and vote-buying, declaring that the country belonged to the people and not a desperate ruling cabal.
”Do not sell your future for temporary handouts and do not back down in the face of state-sponsored fear,” Adebayo added.
He urged citizens to defend the sanctity of the ballot box.
Adebayo pledged his solidarity with progressive forces to ensure a peaceful and credible democratic process moving forward.
