I'm Yoruba's number one monarch historically, I don't fight for supremacy - Alaafin

Daily Post about 2 hours 1 mins read

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, says he is the number one king in Yorubaland.

Speaking during an interview with Edmund Obilo on State Affairs, Owoade based his remark on history, stating that he is not fighting for supremacy.

Asked if he is the supreme king in Yorubaland, the royal father said, "Historically, yes. If you want to go by history and the contribution of Oyo to Yoruba civilisation, then I would say that the Alaafin is number one."

It will be recalled that in 2025, the Alaafin had a disagreement with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.

The problem started when the Ooni gave Dotun Sanusi, a businessman from Ibadan, the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland.

Reacting, the Alaafin told the Ooni to withdraw the title within 48 hours.

According to him, the Ooni does not have the power to give a title that covers the whole of Yorubaland.
