Independence Day: ‘2027 election must be free, fair, no more gambling’ – APM warn

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Allied People’s Movement, APM, has said that the current economic hardship bedevilling the country can be traced to poor leadership.

The party said it was an aberration in a democratic system of governance for such economic challenges to persist, adding that citizens deserved a fair deal from the government they voted into office.

APM said citizens needed to enjoy the dividends of democracy, not carnage. The party stated this in its message to Nigerians on the occasion of the 66th Independence anniversary.

“In 66 years, Nigerians have witnessed unprecedented political, economic and social challenges, and prevailed – a testament to citizens’ resilience and abiding faith in God and the fatherland,” a statement signed by Dr Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, APM National Chairman, said.

The party commended the nation’s founding fathers, who, according to it, despite all odds, secured the much-needed independence from Britain on October 1, 1960.

“It is time to reset Nigeria. It is time for a national rebirth and a greater future for all citizens,” it added.

“The elections must be credible and transparent, and the will of the people respected by all stakeholders in the democratic process.

“The era of gambling with our national destiny is over. It is what puts us in this governance quagmire of perennial insecurity and economic hardship. Nigerians are no longer safe in their own country and not sure where the next meal will come from.

“The upcoming 2027 general election offers us another opportunity to vote for competent leaders who will put Nigeria first.

“As we celebrate the nation’s 66th Independence, let us aspire for a new Nigeria built on unity, peace, progress and development. Let us continue to stand together as one nation. Together, we will reset Nigeria to fulfil its manifest destiny of greatness and prosperity.”
