INEC Boss, Amupitan Announces The Artificial Intelligence To Verify 2027 Election Results

InformationNG about 1 hour 2 mins read

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its election results verification process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, October 6, while discussing the commission’s plans for AI governance and preparations for the upcoming elections.

Amupitan revealed that INEC has created a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division under its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department as part of efforts to strengthen the credibility and security of the electoral process.

According to him, the commission has also integrated automated AI auditing tools into its results verification system. He explained that the technology will operate under a five-pillar AI governance framework, with human officials maintaining mandatory oversight of the process.

“The Commission has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division within the ICT department,” Amupitan said.

He added that an AI governance framework policy is currently being finalised by the commission.

Beyond results verification, the INEC chairman said the commission is also deploying AI-powered tools to improve cybersecurity and protect its digital infrastructure from possible attacks.

He explained that INEC is working with international technology partners to integrate AI-driven anomaly detection systems capable of monitoring database traffic and detecting suspicious activities.

The technology, he said, will also help protect the commission’s public portals from cyber intrusions and unauthorised alterations.

Meanwhile, INEC is continuing with other preparations for the 2027 elections, including nationwide mock accreditation exercises designed to test its systems and improve the overall voting process.

With the increased use of AI and other digital technologies, the commission says it is focused on making the 2027 elections more secure, transparent and reliable.
