The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, is currently away from Abuja on an official assignment.
The commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Victoria Eta-Messi, said Amupitan is currently away from Abuja on an official assignment.
Eta-Messi also stated that Amupitan has the authority to delegate his responsibilities to any National Commissioner.
This came in response to questions raised by the Obidient Movement over the whereabouts of its Chairman.
Recall that the Obidient Movement had earlier demanded an explanation from INEC over Amupitan’s whereabouts after National Commissioner, Professor Rhoda Gumus, appeared as Acting Chairman during an engagement with an African Union delegation at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
A post on the commission’s official X handle and Facebook page indicated that Amupitan had been engaged in activities outside the country.
Last Friday, a post on INEC’s social media accounts showed Amupitan in Canada, where he met with Google Global Lead, Civic Responsibility, David J. Lopez, accompanied by the Director of Information and Communication Technology, Dr Lawrence Bayode.
Reacting, Eta-Messi said, “The Chairman is on an official assignment outside Abuja. He can delegate powers to any National Commissioner.”
