The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is investigating concerns over suspected AI-generated photographs in its preliminary voters’ register, following public questions about the images ahead of the 2027 elections.
The commission disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee.
INEC said the register published online on October 26 was the same preliminary register displayed physically across Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15.
It added that questionable records identified during the exercise had been flagged for further examination.
“The Commission is also examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings,” the statement said.
The commission stressed that the register was not final and that the verification and correction process would be completed before the final Register of Voters is certified on December 15, 2026.
