Security forces came under attack on Monday while protecting farmers in Tudun Bichi community, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, resulting in a gun battle with suspected bandits.
The development was contained in a post shared by crisis reporter in the North-West region, Bakatsine, via his X handle.
According to the post, several of the attackers were reportedly killed during the exchange of fire, while security personnel also suffered casualties.
However, the exact number of those killed or injured on both sides was not disclosed.
The attackers were confronted by personnel of the Nigerian Army, the Kebbi State Forest Guards and local vigilantes, triggering a gun battle that reportedly lasted for several hours.
According to Bakatsine, the latest attack followed repeated threats allegedly issued by notorious bandit leader Kachalla Ilu, who had warned communities against farming unless they agreed to negotiate with him.
DAILY POST reports that the attack also comes weeks after suspected bandits intensified pressure on farming communities by imposing a N40 million levy on farmers across several communities in Bena, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area as a condition for allowing them access to their farmlands for the 2026 farming season.
Residents said the persistent attacks were aimed at preventing farmers from accessing their fields during the cultivation season, raising fresh concerns over food production and security in the area.
The residents commended the courage of the security personnel defending the community but expressed concern over what they described as inadequate equipment available to the troops.
They called on the authorities to strengthen operational support for security forces to enhance the protection of farming communities.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives had yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
