Residents of Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Friday protested the recurring attacks, kidnappings and worsening insecurity in the area.
The protest followed multiple attacks by suspected armed bandits in parts of the state, including the recent attack on Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area, where one person was killed and an INEC staff member working in Tambuwal was abducted.
Speaking during the protest, residents called on the Federal and Sokoto State governments to take urgent measures to protect lives and property and restore security in affected communities.
Growing insecurity, according to the protesters, has created fear among residents, particularly farmers, traders and rural dwellers whose livelihoods depend on access to farms and markets.
They demanded the deployment of more security personnel and operational equipment to vulnerable communities, as well as intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations.
The residents also called for stronger coordination among the military, police and other security agencies to track down those responsible for the attacks and prevent further incidents.
Concerned about the impact of the insecurity on agriculture and livelihoods, the protesters warned that continued attacks could force residents to abandon their homes and farmlands for safer locations.
Confirming the protest, the Sokoto State Police Command said it was aware of the situation and that security operatives were “on top of the situation.”
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said the police were monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to maintain security and protect lives and property in the affected area.
