Inside ‘Chaos in the Ring’: When Celebrity Rivalries Entered the Ring

Streamer, Carter Efe and Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna have continued to dominate reels and post online following their emergence as winners in the headline celebrity boxing bouts tagged “Chaos in the Ring” Independence Edition, which took place in Lagos.

Efe retained his celebrity boxing title after beating rapper, Speed Darlington, while Phyna, real name Josephine Otabor, stopped Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing in the final round of their scheduled bout. The two celebrity contests were held on Thursday, October 1, at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island.

The highly publicised celebrity bouts included part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary. ‘Chaos in the Ring’ delivered a night of superb celebrity bouts and unforgettable entertainment, attracting some other names in the industry spectators. There were also professional championship bouts.

The celebrity contests provided a very different kind of spectacle. Efe and Darlington delivered one of the evening’s most entertaining encounters, with Efe combining his moment with unexpected dance breaks. Speed, meanwhile, spent much of the fight protecting his face.

Efe was eventually declared the winner, and after the bout, the entertainer immediately set his sights on an even bigger challenge, declaring that he wants to fight boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. ‘I’m tired of fighting local celebrity fighters. I need Mayweather’, he said.

The night’s female celebrity contest between Phyna and Nkechi Blessing delivered perhaps the loudest reactions of the evening, as both women brought an unexpected level of intensity to the ring. The atmosphere inside the arena continued to build as Phyna and Nkechi exchanged punches.

The crowd remained fully invested in the contest, turning the bout into one of the most talked-about moments of the night. Phyna eventually found the decisive opening and knocked Nkechi Blessing out, bringing the contest to an emphatic conclusion and securing the victory.

By the final bell, Chaos in the Ring had delivered everything its name promised: championship boxing, knockouts, national rivalry, celebrity drama, unexpected sportsmanship, and a crowd that stayed locked in until the very end.  After the victory, Phyna called out actress Etinosa Idemudia, who was present at the venue.

Phyna claimed Etinosa had been sending her messages before challenging her to another celebrity boxing contest. Etinosa accepted the challenge, potentially setting the stage for another bout under the promotion. Phyna also indicated that she wants to explore boxing beyond the celebrity contest.

The celebrity boxing match staged by Balmoral Group Promotions’ “Chaos in the Ring” contest for the first time featured female celebrity fighters.  Nkechi, Phyna had spent the days leading up to the bout trading words, with their exchanging generating considerable attention across social media and entertainment circles.

The beef between the two entertainers began after Nkechi Blessing publicly called out Phyna over a movie role in one of her productions. What followed was an escalating online back-and-forth, with Nkechi issuing a stern warning about Phyna’s attitude, describing it as disrespectful.

Phyna fired back with her own video response. The dispute later evolved into a boxing rivalry after Balmoral Promotions announced the bout. The pair continued to exchange threats and taunts during promotional appearances, including confrontations at an All White Party and The Morayo Show.

Their September 29 press conference and face-off also ended in a physical confrontation before security personnel intervened.  Phyna had predicted a second-round knockout before the fight but ultimately needed until the fourth round to secure the stoppage.

For Efe, his bout with Darlington was also the culmination of a rivalry that had played out publicly in the build-up to the event. Darlington had challenged him after his defeat to Portable, leading to a series of exchanges between the two entertainers.
