Iran adds extra years to Briton’s 10-yr jail term, family says

A British man held by Iran for alleged spying has had two more years added to his 10-year jail term for talking to the media, his son said Wednesday.

Craig Foreman and his wife Lindsay were detained while travelling in Iran during a round-the-world motorbike trip at the start of 2025.

They were sentenced in February to 10 years in prison on espionage charges that they deny.

“We have received extremely concerning reports that Craig has been sentenced to a further two years in prison,” their son Joe Bennett said.

“We understand he was told he was being taken to see his lawyer, but was instead brought before a judge and informed of the additional sentence.”

Bennett said Craig Foreman “was told the two years had been added because he had spoken to the press”.

“We didn’t think we could be any more shocked at their appalling treatment, but in this case we are absolutely flabbergasted.”

In May, the couple launched a lengthy hunger strike to protest their detention, with Craig Foreman now on the 68th day of refusing food and Lindsay on her 59th.

“Both have lost a significant amount of weight and their health continues to deteriorate,” the family said in a statement.

“My mum and Craig are eighteen months into an ordeal they should never have known,” added Bennett.

“They are weak, they are hungry, and now Craig is being punished simply for being heard. To add two more years to an innocent man’s sentence, in secret and with no chance to defend himself, is a flagrant abuse of the most basic rights any person is owed.”

The couple travelled to Iran after ignoring warnings from friends, family and the UK foreign ministry, which advises against all travel to Iran.

They are just the latest of numerous Westerners held by Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution, with Tehran accused of so-called “hostage diplomacy” to extract concessions from its foes in Europe and from the United States.

Iran on Tuesday slammed a British plan to ban support for its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, alongside an Iran-linked group accused of a series of attacks against the Jewish community.
