Iran warns it could close Strait of Hormuz as tensions rise over possible new US strikes

Iran has warned that it could shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz if the United States follows through on threats to launch fresh military strikes, further escalating tensions in the Gulf.

According to an Iranian security official quoted by state broadcaster Press TV, Tehran remains committed to maintaining control over maritime traffic through the vital waterway and will not accept any alternative shipping arrangements outside its authority.

“The memorandum of understanding clearly states that Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with its own arrangements,” the official said.

“Iran will not permit the establishment of any new route outside the framework of its own arrangements.”

The official added that any renewed military action against Iran would trigger a response that could include the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi fired back at recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had suggested additional American strikes against Iran could be imminent.

Responding on social media, Araghchi condemned Trump’s rhetoric while defending Iran’s national identity.

“Addressing the civilized and courageous nation of Iran with derogatory language does not diminish its greatness,” Araghchi wrote.

“Iranians are known for their civility, culture, and strong moral values. We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action, fearlessly and with great valor.”

The latest exchange of threats comes amid mounting fears of a wider regional confrontation, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a critical flashpoint for global energy supplies and international security.
