We’ve had enough scandals associated with governance, and so many things going on. And this is the time to send the right signals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“It doesn’t matter if they cleared him because there is no court decision. The fact is that he is tainted, and the court is yet to determine the veracity of the claims. He ought not to have been considered. S. Idris of FCT High Court 25 after the court found him guilty of culpable homicide in connection with the incident, which occurred on January 6, 2024, at a hotel in the Kubwa area of Abuja.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the command initially charged Bassey with culpable homicide punishable with death under Sections 220(a) and (b) and Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, following the conclusion of investigations into the incident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She said evidence presented before the court showed that the accused and the deceased were friends, adding that the incident occurred after a disagreement between both men at the birthday celebration organised by Nnonifu escalated into a physical confrontation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The prosecution led evidence establishing that the defendant assaulted the deceased by slapping and pushing him, causing him to fall and hit his head on a concrete surface. judge issued the warning on Thursday following the absence of Sowore’s lead counsel, Mr Olumide Fusika, SAN, and Reuben Adakole during the proceedings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During earlier proceedings on July 13, Sowore through Adakole sought a long adjournment but the request was turned down by the judge.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Adakole had applied that the defence of his client in the charge be shifted till after the two months annual vacation of the court.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The activist who is put on trial for allegedly calling President Tinubu a criminal on his Facebook page and X handle had predicated his long adjournment request on the ground that his choice lawyer, Fusika, was out of the country to attend to family matters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>His request was however vehemently opposed by counsel to the DSS, Mr Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, who drew the attention of the court to 10 previous adjournments the trial suffered at the instance of Sowore.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The senior lawyer had told Justice Umar that the latest request for long adjournment was a ploy to further frustrate the criminal trial.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Kehinde had also drawn the attention of the court to day-to-day accelerated trial granted by the court in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice System, ACJA, 2015.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a brief ruling, Justice Umar had turned down the long adjournment application based on the previous order of the court for day to day >\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Cp>Alex Enumah in Abuja\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in Apo, Abuja, yesterday, ordered the final forfeiture of assets worth about N8.97 billion linked to businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu to the federal government.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Justice Jude Onwugbuzie of the FCT High Court made the order  in a motion brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The assets the court held should be permanently forfeited to the FG included; jewellery valued at N4.645 billion, 11 exotic cars worth N4.293 billion, $50,000 in cash, and N30 million in cash.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The combined value of the jewellery and luxury vehicles alone is estimated at nearly N9 billion, making it one of the most significant asset forfeiture orders involving a single individual in recent years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is the second time assets linked to the businesswoman would be forfeited to the federal government.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Earlier in March this year, a Federal High Court in Abuja had granted an order of final forfeiture of the sum of $13 million allegedly linked to Achimugu, and Oceangate Engineering Oil & Gas Ltd.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In granted the request for final forfeiture, Justice Emeka Nwite had held that the EFCC was able to prove that the funds were proceeds of fraud.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The anti-graft agency had last year declared Achimugu wanted over allegations bordering on money laundering.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Spokesman of the commission, Mr Dele Oyewale, had made the disclosure in a circular posted on the commission’s X handle (formerly tweeter).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The circular reads, “The public is hereby notified that Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu, whose photograph appears above is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an alleged case of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Achimugu, 51, is an indigene of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State and her last known address is 6C, Rudolf Close, Maitama, Abuja.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Anybody with useful information as to her whereabouts should please contact the commission at its Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Port Harcourt or Abuja offices or through 08093322644, its email address: info@efcc.gov.ng or the nearest police station or other security agencies.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The agency had, in a letter, summoned Achimugu to appear at its Port Harcourt office on March 5 over alleged money laundering and a high-profile investment scam.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The letter, dated March 4 and signed by the EFCC’s acting zonal director in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Adebayo Adeniyi, was sent to Achimugu’s residential address in Abuja.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This commission is currently investigating a case in which the need to obtain certain clarification from you becomes imperative.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In view of the above, you are kindly requested to attend an interview with the undersigned through the Head of Investigation on Wednesday, 5th March 2025, by 10:00 hours prompt,” the letter read in part.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, rather than honouring the invite, Achimugu was said to have travelled out of Nigeria on March 6, an action which led the agency to obtained an arrest warrant and declare Achimugu as a wanted >\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Cp>Alex Enumah in Abuja\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Court of Appeal, Abuja, has upturned the judgment of a Federal High Court, Abuja, which nullified part of the election guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the 2027 general elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A three-member panel of the appellate court in a unanimous judgement held that the trial court was wrong in nullifying the guidelines which did not in any way violate the 1991 Constitution nor the Electoral Act.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Justice Mohammed Umar had in a judgement delivered on May 20, voided the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities of INEC, for the 2027 general election by a Federal High Court in Abuja, on the grounds among others that the time-frame “imposed” by INEC on political parties to submit their membership register, conduct primaries, and same names of candidates for the 2027 general election, “is inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Umar had voided the time-table while delivering judgement in the suit marked: FHC\u002FABJ\u002FCS\u002F517\u002F2016, and filed by the Youth Party.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The plaintiff in the suit dated and filed on March 11, by its counsel, J. O.
