IYD 2026: Youths Must Become Custodians of Nigeria’s Democracy, Says FCC Chairman, Omidiran

This Day about 3 hours 3 mins read

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Mrs. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, has charged Nigerian youths to move beyond being mere beneficiaries of democracy and assume their rightful place as active stakeholders, custodians and builders of the nation’s democratic future.

Omidiran gave the charge in a goodwill message delivered on her behalf by the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State in the FCC, Hon. Peter Ogbonna Eze, at a programme organised by the Nigeria Youth Organization with the theme, ‘The Role of Nigerian Youth in Consolidating the Gains of Democracy in Nigeria.’

The FCC chairman described the theme as timely and fundamental to the future of Nigeria, stressing that the sustainability and progress of the country’s democracy would depend substantially on the commitment, character, participation and leadership of the younger generation.

According to her, Nigerian youths possess the energy, creativity, innovation and intellectual capacity required to drive national development, adding that they must recognise that democracy extends beyond periodic elections.

She said democratic consolidation also requires respect for the rule of law, accountability, tolerance, peaceful participation, responsible citizenship, protection of fundamental rights and respect for Nigeria’s diversity.

Omidiran consequently urged young Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech, misinformation and other actions capable of weakening democratic institutions and national cohesion.

She also acknowledged the decision of the Nigeria Youth Organization to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, describing the endorsement as an indication of the organisation’s confidence in the importance of continuity, stability and sustained implementation of government policies and programmes.

She noted that continuity in governance provides an opportunity for administrations to consolidate reforms, strengthen institutions and build on initiatives already commenced for the benefit of Nigerians.

The FCC boss further emphasised the importance of equity, inclusion and fairness in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy, noting that these principles remain central to the constitutional mandate of the commission.

She said young Nigerians, irrespective of their state of origin, ethnicity or background, deserved fair access to opportunities, adding that equitable inclusion would strengthen their confidence and commitment to nation-building.

Omidiran called on youths to occupy the frontlines of constructive engagement with government and democratic institutions, urging them not only to demand accountability but also to contribute ideas, proffer solutions and accept responsibility for the development of the country.

She commended the Nigeria Youth Organization for creating platforms capable of equipping young Nigerians with civic knowledge, leadership skills and opportunities for meaningful participation in governance.

The FCC chairman stressed that securing Nigeria’s future could not be achieved by government alone, but required a sustained partnership among government, civil society, communities and the nation’s youth.

She urged young Nigerians to participate actively in democratic processes, engage government constructively, innovate and provide responsible leadership, saying their energy should become a force for peace, their creativity a tool for development and their leadership a pathway to a more united and prosperous Nigeria.

“Let us build a Nigeria where every young person believes that his or her voice matters, where merit is rewarded, where opportunities are accessible, and where diversity is a source of strength rather than division,” she said.

Omidiran, who spoke on behalf of the FCC and the 5th Commission, commended the Nigeria Youth Organization for convening the programme and its continued commitment to youth development and democratic advancement.

She wished participants fruitful deliberations and a successful programme.
