King Izonebi Alfred fondly called Jking, the indescribably talented Nigerian highlife musician, has shaken the music world with six new songs. The six songs — ‘Biri Bein Ghan’, ‘Chief Adowei Binaebi’, ‘Chief Boro Opudu’, ‘Hon.Seles Saboh’, ‘Traditional Series (Bini Ebi)’ and ‘Izon Fiye’ — are thematically and instrumentally built to tell great stories as a guide for any society suffocated by moral and cultural deficit.
In the new songs, Izonebi Alfred is philosophically situated by two quotable statements that ‘philanthropy is the prerogative of a good man with a good heart’, and that ‘taking a recourse to stealing is the prepossession of a man with an ungrateful heart’. Behind these two statements, Alfred musically builds an edifice that asserts a clear moral direction for this generation and beyond.
Alfred’s songs always provoke healthy intellectual, cultural and moral discussions among music enthusiasts. His new songs carry this potential in dimensions never known in the history of highlife music in the Niger Delta. Like waters that brim the riverbank, Alfred’s new songs are loaded and full.
