class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, the owner of a news website with more than 52,000 followers, was gunned down in Oaxaca state in the south of Mexico, Article 19 said, adding to a tally of journalist homicides tracked by Reporters Without Borders.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huesca Manzano died from gunshot wounds when an armed group opened fire on him and two other men, according to the state prosecutor’s report.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His website, Pinotepa Comunica, published news about politics and local issues in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, the city where he lived.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was also a taxi driver.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp He helped the Bears win the 1963 NFL championship and later caught a touchdown pass for the Dallas Cowboys in their 1972 Super Bowl victory.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a coach, Ditka led the Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX in January 1986, when Chicago defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 to end a 23-year championship drought.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also served as an assistant coach with the Cowboys during their Super Bowl-winning campaign in 1978, when they defeated the Denver Broncos.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bears said Ditka’s contribution to the franchise, spanning decades as a player, coach and ambassador, was immeasurable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“His integral role in bringing world championships to our city and our franchise, both as a player and as our coach, established prominence and excellence at a world-class level,” the team said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ditka recorded 121 wins and 95 losses as head coach of the Bears and New Orleans Saints. His forceful personality and hard-hitting approach earned him the nickname “Iron Mike” during his playing career.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After coaching, he became a prominent television football analyst and commentator. His gruff manner and outspoken personality also made him a popular figure in Chicago sports culture, including as a subject of parody on Saturday Night Live.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born and raised in suburban Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ditka played basketball, baseball and American football at the University of Pittsburgh.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1961 after becoming the first rookie tight end in league history to record more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ditka was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988, becoming the first tight end to be inducted into the latter.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bears founder George Halas, who had coached Ditka during his playing career, appointed him head coach in 1982. During his 11 seasons in Chicago, Ditka guided the team to three conference finals and one Super Bowl title.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His celebrated 1985 Bears team finished the regular season with a 15-1 record before defeating New England in the championship game. The squad also became famous for its “Super Bowl Shuffle” music video.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite occasional clashes with assistant coaches and players, Ditka established himself as one of the most recognisable figures in American football.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bears retired his jersey number, 89, in 2013. Ditka described the honour as “the consummation of a career” and “a tremendous honour.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also appeared in films and television programmes, declare an official moratorium on executions and state governors to commute eligible death sentences to life imprisonment, amid concerns that more than 3,000 inmates remain on death row across Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The commission said Nigeria was approaching 10 consecutive years without a state execution, a development it described as meeting the international standard for a de facto moratorium, despite the continued imposition of death sentences and the prolonged detention of condemned inmates.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Chief Tony Ojukwu, made the call yesterday in Abuja during the commemoration of the 2026 World Day Against the Death Penalty at the commission’s headquarters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ojukwu urged the federal government to formalise the suspension of executions, while calling on state governors to exercise their constitutional prerogative of mercy to commute death sentences, particularly in cases where inmates had exhausted their appeals but remained on death row.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He also advocated a review of laws prescribing mandatory death sentences, arguing that judges should have the discretion to consider mitigating circumstances and systemic vulnerabilities before determining appropriate punishment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although capital punishment remains constitutionally valid in Nigeria, the NHRC chief stressed that its administration must be consistent with the country’s human rights obligations and the fundamental principles of fair trial and due process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He expressed concern that inadequate access to pro bono legal representation, forced confessions and delays in bringing suspects to trial continued to undermine procedural justice, raising questions about the fairness of proceedings in capital cases.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, the protection of human rights requires more than the existence of legal provisions, insisting that the justice system must guarantee fair hearings and ensure that the death penalty is restricted to the most serious crimes in line with applicable international standards.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The commission outlined three immediate policy measures: an official moratorium on executions, the commutation of eligible death sentences to life imprisonment, and a comprehensive review of laws prescribing mandatory capital punishment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ojukwu’s appeal places renewed focus on the position of condemned inmates who have exhausted their legal options but remain in custody, as well as the wider implications of prolonged confinement on the administration of criminal justice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A formal moratorium, the commission argued, would provide an immediate policy framework for suspending executions while the country considers broader reforms to its capital punishment regime.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The proposed review of mandatory death penalty provisions would also allow courts to take individual circumstances into account when sentencing offenders, rather than being compelled by law to impose the same punishment regardless of relevant mitigating factors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The commemoration was organised by the NHRC in partnership with Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) France, the Rosemary Aduku, has reportedly died after spending several days in captivity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her death was announced on Friday by the Chairman of Olamaboro Local Government Area, Dr Ameh Williams, in a statement issued on behalf of the Olamaboro Executive Council.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aduku, popularly known as Hon. Rosella among her colleagues, was described as a humble, dependable and compassionate politician who was committed to the happiness and well-being of those around her.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the statement announcing her death and burial arrangements, Williams expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the late councillor as a remarkable individual whose contributions to her community and colleagues would not be forgotten.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement read, “It is with deep sorrow we announce the sudden demise of our dear sister and colleague, Hon. Mrs Rosemary Aduku, the Honourable Councillor representing the good people of Ogugu Ward III in the 8th Olamaboro Legislative Council.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The council chairman said Aduku was widely respected for her humility, reliability and positive disposition towards others.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Hon. Rosella, as she is fondly called among her colleagues in the council and members of the Olamaboro Executive Council, has been a wonderful soul and down-to-earth.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“She has been a reliable fellow whose idea is to make everyone around her happy. Though your life was short-lived, we will definitely take solace in your legacies and testimonies we have received since your demise,” the statement added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williams also extended condolences to the bereaved family, members of the Olamaboro Legislative Council, the Executive Council and the entire Ogugu community over the loss.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He prayed for God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give her loved ones the strength to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Adieu, Hon.
