In a significant Democracy Day gesture, the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 97 inmates, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation, reconciliation, and second chances in a democratic society.

Speaking during the official clemency ceremony held at the  Kaduna State  Correctional Centre on Friday, the governor described the exercise as an expression of compassion and a reflection of the values that underpin democracy, including justice, equity, the rule of law, and respect for human dignity.

The governor said the move followed recommendations from the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and was carried out under the constitutional powers vested in the office of the governor.

According to him, the exercise involved outright release, commutation of sentences, and payment of fines for eligible convicts.

“While justice must be upheld, we must never lose sight of the transformative power of redemption and the profound impact of second chances,” the governor said.

Addressing the beneficiaries, he urged them to view their freedom as both an opportunity and a responsibility, calling on them to embrace lawful conduct, demonstrate genuine repentance, and contribute positively to their communities.

The governor also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, and residents of Kaduna State to support the reintegration of the released individuals by welcoming them back into society without discrimination.

” To those being released, this moment signifies not only the gift of freedom but also a profound responsibility. It is an invitation to embrace genuine repentance, engage in lawful conduct, and contribute meaningfully to society as responsible citizens. I urge you to seize this opportunity to become agents of positive change within your families and communities”.

” I also implore our traditional rulers, religious leaders, community figures, and all citizens of Kaduna State to welcome these individuals back into society with understanding and support. Successful reintegration is rooted in acceptance, encouragement, and the provision of opportunities to rebuild lives”.

He noted that successful reintegration depends on acceptance, encouragement, and access to opportunities that enable former inmates to rebuild their lives and become productive citizens.

According to the governor, a compassionate society balances justice with mercy, adding that embracing rehabilitated individuals helps strengthen communities, reduce recidivism, and promote public safety.

The governor commended the Judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Legal Aid Council, security agencies, traditional and religious institutions, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the initiative.

He commended the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, applauding its professionalism and commitment in identifying deserving beneficiaries and ensuring that the process was conducted fairly and transparently.

The governor concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a Kaduna State where justice is tempered with mercy, compassion strengthens accountability, and every citizen has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society.
