It also lets this hospital’s specialists to support health workers in our primary and secondary facilities, strengthening the very system we are building together,’’ he added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In her speech, Prof Armiyau noted that although mental health conditions are generally not communicable diseases in the medical sense, she argued that some mental-health-related behaviors, emotions, or symptoms can spread socially.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’Let us also remember that mental health is not only an individual responsibility. It is a shared responsibility. During this Mental Health Week, I encourage each one of us to take practical steps.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’Check on a families, friends and colleagues. Listen to someone who needs to talk. Take care of yourself. Seek professional help when necessary. And, most importantly, treat others with kindness and understanding,’’ she counselled.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Medical Director commended Governor Uba Sani for his administration’s huge investment in the health sector and other critical areas in Kaduna State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’Under your leadership, Kaduna State has taken important steps towards strengthening the mental health system and promoting a more humane and rights-based approach to mental healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’ The enactment of the Kaduna State Mental Health Law in September 2025 represents an important institutional step towards protecting the rights and dignity of persons living with mental health conditions. I salute you for this!’’, she added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prof Armiyau noted that FNPH has collaborated with the Kaduna State Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (KADSAMHSA), by training and the certification of multidisciplinary health workers drawn from PHCs across all 23 Local Government Areas, under the WHO Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She further said that the hospital has also unveiled a Smart Digital Patient Card, to provide patients with easier access to essential information, including biodata, medical history, treatment records and appointments.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the Medical Director of FNPH, the Smart Digital Patient Card also supports electronic payments Adegoke Naheem Ademola, Chief of Staff to the NANS President, he said corruption undermines the nation’s integrity and should be tackled headlong.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>However, NANS cautioned that lawful enforcement must not become a source of intimidation for students.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The association said it was “not against” the activities of the anti-graft agency and did not condone financial crimes in any form.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Ademola described the association as a stakeholder in nation-building and said NANS was totally opposed to fraud and every act capable of undermining the country’s integrity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>According to the statement, the association supports the mandate of the Commission to investigate, prevent and prosecute financial crimes, and maintains that no Nigerian, regardless of status, should be above the law.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>NANS argued that a Nigeria free from fraud would allow institutions to function better and give citizens greater confidence in the system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>However, drawing a line on how operations are conducted, Ademola said NANS opposed “any form of illegal abuse, harassment, intimidation, or operation that makes our students feel unsafe or threatened.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>While acknowledging the lawful duties of security agencies, he stressed that such duties must remain within the bounds of the law and respect the safety and dignity of Nigerian students.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The statement referenced the EFCC’s operations in the early hours of the day in Sadly, this is a challenge being treated with levity in Nigeria. Observed on 10th October every year, the 2026 official theme announced by the World Federation for Mental Health is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.” The primary focus is to highlight the importance of listening to people who share personal experiences that could help drive policy change, reduce stigma, and improve care systems.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> With only nine federal neuropsychiatric hospitals in the country, serious budget constraints and the exodus of many experts in the field who seek greener pastures abroad, it comes as no surprise that mental illness is on the rampage in Nigeria.  For years, the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN) has been raising the alarm that no fewer than 60 million Nigerians live with one form of mental disorder or the other. More unfortunate is that of these numbers, about 90 per cent have been reported not to have access to appropriate mental care. But the number of Nigerians suffering from one mental illness or the other – from the mild to the severe – is likely to grow because there is no commensurate plan in place to address it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> On 5th January 2023, the late President Muhammadu Buhari signed the National Mental Health Bill 2021 into law. The act repealed the Lunacy Act of 1958 which considered mental illness as an embarrassment and a disturbance to the society and therefore recommends that people with such health conditions be kept away in asylum without specific care. The new Act prohibits forced treatment, seclusion, or restraint without proper safeguards and allows patients to help create their medical plans. But to successfully address the challenge, the authorities must do more to address the issue of stigma while an awareness campaign is also important for the prevention of social habits that are detrimental to mental health, especially among young people.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> As many experts have repeatedly said, mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. Like diabetes and heart disease, it is a medical condition which is treatable. Many people with mental health illness return to a productive and fulfilling life after promptly seeking help. But the country is not doing enough to tackle this public health emergency, and it is responsible for the growing cases of suicides. Stemming the tide requires a multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary approach involving various government ministries, agencies, and departments, (MDAs) especially that of health, labour and employment, and social services.   \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to health professionals, mental health includes the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of people, and they affect the way such individuals think, feel, and behave. There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness, but the more common disorders are depression, bipolar disorder, dementia, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. They attribute the cause of mental illness to three factors: biological, which include genes or brain chemistry; life experiences, such as trauma or abuse, and family history.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> Considering that mental disorder is becoming a growing epidemic in the country, we encourage authorities at both federal and the states to, as a matter of urgency, create a statutory budget line for mental health in the annual budgetary allocation, as this would ensure funding for the public health issue is protected. This fund should be used for the integration of mental care into primary health across local governments in the country, as well as to ensure that every general hospital has a department for mental health with accompanying psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and psychologists running the
