A suspected phone robber has been shot dead by police after allegedly attempting to attack an officer with a panga during a pursuit following the robbery of a university student near the Northern Bypass–Entebbe Expressway interchange.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., when a female student of Metropolitan International University in Mengo was travelling home on a boda-boda.

According to police, the student was attacked by about four men armed with pangas, who grabbed her bag containing two mobile phones.

The victim reportedly raised an alarm, attracting police officers who were conducting patrols in the area.

The suspects fled into a nearby swamp as officers responded, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, one of the suspects allegedly turned against an officer and attempted to attack him with a panga. Police said the suspect was shot and later died while being taken for medical treatment.

Officers recovered a panga, a knife and the victim’s bag containing the two mobile phones from the deceased suspect.

Police said the identity of the deceased had not yet been established by the time of the statement. His body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The incident comes as police intensify patrols and surveillance in crime-prone areas within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area and other parts of the country in a renewed effort to combat criminal activity.

Police said the heightened vigilance had enabled officers to respond swiftly to criminal incidents in several areas.

Investigations into the incident are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and help identify the deceased suspect and the other alleged accomplices.
