Kano Assembly sets October 12 for State Police Bill’s second reading

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Kano State House of Assembly has begun reviewing the proposed State Police Bill after formally receiving the legislation, with plans to advance it to second reading on October 12, 2026.

The development was announced on Friday by Kamaluddeen Shawai, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Assembly, Jibril Falgore.

According to Shawai, copies of the bill have been distributed to all lawmakers to enable them to study its provisions, examine its implications and suggest amendments where necessary.

He explained that the bill had already been presented during a recent plenary session, allowing lawmakers to commence the legislative process in line with established procedures.

“Furthermore, the State Police Bill was read on the floor of the House during a recent plenary session, during which members were allowed to begin proper legislative consideration of the Bill in accordance with due process,” the statement said.

The statement added that the Assembly expected to proceed to the next stage of consideration once members had completed their individual assessments.

“It is anticipated that after members have completed their individual review, the Bill will be scheduled for second reading on October 12, 2026, for further deliberation and approval by the entire House,” it said.

Speaking on the development, Falgore reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to addressing security challenges and maintaining peace across Kano.

The Speaker noted that although Kano remained relatively peaceful compared with many other states, proactive measures were necessary to sustain and strengthen the state’s security system.

“Kano remains relatively peaceful compared to many other states in the country, proactive legislation is crucial to sustaining and strengthening the state’s security architecture,” the statement added.

The proposed State Police Bill forms part of efforts to amend the Nigerian Constitution to allow states to establish their own police forces.

The State Police Constitution Amendment Bill was transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026, for consideration as part of the constitutional amendment process.
