Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has admitted his side must raise their level when they face Sweden in a crucial Group F clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday.
The Dutch go into the encounter under pressure after surrendering a late lead in a 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening game, while Sweden arrive full of confidence following a 5-1 demolition of Tunisia — their highest-scoring World Cup performance since 1938.
According to Reuters, the Netherlands were unbeaten throughout qualifying, but questions emerged after Koeman’s tactical switch against Japan failed to protect their advantage as they conceded an 89th-minute equaliser.
After appearing overly cautious in their opener, the Dutch will be expected to produce a far more convincing display against a Sweden side revitalised under coach Graham Potter.
One positive for the Netherlands is the improving fitness of forward Memphis Depay, who came off the bench against Japan but struggled to influence the game after recently recovering from a thigh injury.
“Memphis is almost ready,” Koeman said after the Japan match.
“I can feel he’s coming, and then I put him on the pitch, but we couldn’t attack anymore.
“I’m aware that we need to play better.”
The Dutch will look to experienced stars such as Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Cody Gakpo to provide the spark that was missing in their opening fixture.
Sweden, meanwhile, know another victory would all but secure their place in the knockout stage after an emphatic start to the tournament.
The Scandinavian side have enjoyed a resurgence since Potter took charge last October, qualifying through the European playoffs before arriving in North America with renewed belief.
Their attacking duo of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres were both on target against Tunisia, while midfielder Yasin Ayari scored twice in a standout display.
Potter, however, insisted his players are keeping their feet on the ground despite the impressive opening result.
“There were lots of positives for us in terms of stability. It was a good night to start the tournament,” Potter said.
“It’s a good start but that’s all it is. We face a different opponent in the next game. Saturday is a massive game for us.”
With both teams harbouring ambitions of topping Group F, the clash in Houston is shaping up as one of the standout fixtures of the second round of group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup.
