The Lagos State Government has intensified its crackdown on hoodlums accused of harassing, intimidating and extorting motorists along major roads in the state.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on X on Sunday, saying operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) carried out a midnight enforcement operation along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway.
According to Wahab, the operation targeted miscreants allegedly involved in harassing motorists and other road users, extorting money from them and damaging vehicles when their demands were rejected.
“The Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) conducted a midnight enforcement operation along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway to apprehend miscreants and hoodlums who have been constituting a nuisance and posing a threat to motorists and other road users,” he said.
Wahab said the state government would sustain intelligence-led operations against individuals whose activities threaten public safety and disrupt movement across the state.
“The RRS will continue to sustain intelligence-led operations and enforcement actions against criminal elements whose activities threaten public safety and disrupt the free movement of people and vehicles across the State,” he added.
The commissioner had earlier reacted to a documentary shared on X showing hoodlums allegedly harassing celebrities and demanding money from them.
He said government had repeatedly apprehended and dislodged street urchins from different parts of Lagos, but argued that public patronage was encouraging them to return to the streets.
“The continued financial support and patronage they receive from some influencers, celebrities, and members of the public, as seen in this video, inadvertently encourage them to return to the streets and, in some cases, view it as a lucrative means of livelihood, while also breeding a sense of entitlement,” Wahab said.
He acknowledged the government’s responsibility to maintain security and order but urged residents to avoid actions that could encourage street begging and lawlessness.
“We therefore urge everyone to desist from activities that may inadvertently encourage lawlessness, insecurity, street begging, and environmental nuisance on our roads,” he said.
Wahab stressed that cooperation between the government and residents remained essential to tackling the menace and ensuring safer and more orderly roads across Lagos.
