Motorists in Lagos are experiencing traffic disruptions around Anthony Village bus stop along Fusho Williams Avenue following the commencement of rehabilitation work on the damaged service lane.
The closure, which affects a major route linking Fadeyi, Gbagada, Oshodi and Ikorodu Road, has resulted in slow movement as excavation work and other construction activities begin on the road.
The Anthony Village service lane has been a major traffic bottleneck due to recurring potholes and previous repair challenges.
Construction equipment, including graders and rollers, has been deployed to the site, while pedestrians have been advised to exercise caution as parts of the walkway have been affected by the ongoing work.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who announced the development in a statement on Monday, appealed to residents for patience and understanding.
Osiyemi explained that previous asphalt repairs on the road had repeatedly failed due to heavy rainfall, prompting the government to adopt a more durable solution.
“This road has been bad for a while, exacerbated by the constant rains in Lagos.
“The government has been repairing this road with asphalt, and whenever the rains come, it gets damaged again until the next cycle.
“So, government has decided to put a more permanent solution in place,” he said.
The commissioner said the rehabilitation involves the use of interlocking stones, adding that the contractor is working round the clock to complete the project within four days, subject to favourable weather conditions.
He acknowledged that the construction work would cause temporary inconvenience for road users but said the intervention would provide a lasting solution to the recurring problem.
Osiyemi advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead, use alternative routes and check traffic updates before setting out.
According to the traffic advisory, motorists travelling from Fadeyi towards Gbagada and Apapa-Oshodi Expressway are advised to avoid connecting through Anthony and use Pedro as an alternative route.
Those using the service lane have also been advised to remain on the main expressway and connect from the front, while commuters heading towards Oshodi, Anthony and Ikorodu Road are encouraged to use alternative inner-city routes.
The state government warned that motorists should expect delays, particularly during peak hours, and urged commuters to leave earlier or use navigation applications for real-time traffic updates.
The rehabilitation work is expected to last between three and four days initially, with possible traffic adjustments depending on progress and weather conditions.
