Veteran Canadian actor and voice legend, Peter Cullen, best known around the world as the iconic voice behind Optimus Prime has died at the age of 85.
According to a statement released by his family, Cullen passed away peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones.
The family did not disclose the cause of death. Cullen became a household name in 1984 when he first voiced Optimus Prime, the noble leader of the Autobots, in the original Transformers animated television series.
His commanding voice and memorable delivery turned the character into one of the most beloved heroes in animation history.
He later returned to the role in several blockbuster live-action Transformers films, beginning with director Michael Bay’s 2007 adaptation, introducing the character to a new generation of fans.
Beyond Transformers, Cullen enjoyed a remarkable career spanning several decades. He voiced Eeyore, the gentle and gloomy donkey in various Winnie the Pooh productions, and also lent his voice to numerous other popular characters, including K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider.
He additionally provided the distinctive vocal effects for the fearsome Predator in the 1987 science-fiction classic Predator. His portrayal of Optimus Prime left a lasting mark on popular culture.
When the character was killed off in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986, fans reacted with widespread grief and outrage, prompting calls for the beloved Autobot leader’s return.
Reflecting on his connection to the character in previous interviews, Cullen described returning to the role years later as “slipping into an old pair of very comfortable shoes,” expressing gratitude for being part of a franchise that grew into a global phenomenon.
Paying tribute, his family described him as a compassionate and principled man whose work inspired generations of fans across the world.
Peter Cullen is survived by his four children: Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
His death marks the end of an era for millions of Transformers’ fans who grew up hearing the unforgettable voice behind the famous words: “Autobots, roll out.”
