MACBAN petitions IGP, alleges killing of youth, destruction of community in Plateau

Daily Post about 1 hour 3 mins read

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, in Plateau State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, over an alleged killing of a Fulani youth and the destruction of a Fulani community by officers attached to the Police Mobile Force, MOPOL, 81 in Bassa Local Government Area of the state.

In the petition signed on behalf of MACBAN by its state Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the organization accused the Mobile Police officers of opening fire on herders around Maraban Dare community of the council on Tuesday, killing one youth- Adamu Mato and injuring two others identified as Abba Jafar and Adamu Abubakar.

Babayo also accused the officers of invading the Fulani community and destroying their properties in what he described as a deliberate act to intimidate herders and cripple their businesses and source of livelihood.

He said accounts from eyewitnesses indicated that the herders were grazing peacefully in the area when the mobile police officers stormed the grazing field and opened fire on them, adding that the situation forced them to abandon their cattle and flee for their lives.

MACBAN said it was worried that the herders were allegedly being marked for attacks even by security operatives.

"On 20 October 2026, in Bassa Local Government Area, it was reported that Adamu Mato was shot and killed by personnel alleged to be from MOPOL 81 without any provocation. We respectfully request a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

"These reported incidents, if established, are contrary to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force Act, and the professional standards expected of officers entrusted with protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians regardless of ethnicity, religion, or occupation.

"We respectfully urge your office to order an immediate and independent investigation into the conduct of personnel of MOPOL 81 in Plateau State.

"Identify and hold accountable any officers found responsible for unlawful killings, destruction of property, theft, or other misconduct.

"Ensure justice for the family of the late Adamu Mato and all other affected victims. Direct all police personnel deployed in Plateau State to discharge their constitutional duties professionally, impartially, and without discrimination against any ethnic or religious group.

"Take urgent measures to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and prevent further escalation of tensions in the affected communities.

"Your office has consistently demonstrated commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights. We therefore trust that this petition will receive the urgent attention it deserves in the interest of justice, peace, and national unity," it said.
