JOS — The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and other Fulani leaders in Plateau State have directed cattle owners and herders to suspend the movement of cattle to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area following recent attacks on traders and herders.

The directive followed a Sunday attack on herders returning to Bassa from the livestock market, in which, according to the leaders, two people were killed and eight others injured.

Following the incident, Fulani leaders, including MACBAN local government chairmen, Ardos, cattle owners and other stakeholders, met in Jos on Monday to deliberate on the security situation.

At the meeting, the stakeholders resolved to suspend the movement of cattle to the market from October 6 to October 20, 2026.

In a communique signed by the state MACBAN Chairman, Ibrahim Yousuf Babayo, the leaders said the decision followed “extensive deliberations” and was intended to protect lives.

The communique stated: “The meeting unanimously resolved that, as a mark of mourning for those who lost their lives and in the interest of preserving lives, all Fulani cattle owners and herders are directed to suspend the movement of cattle to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market from 6 October 2026 to 20 October 2026.

“All members are urged to comply fully with this resolution.”

The leaders said the temporary suspension would give security agencies and other stakeholders time to strengthen security around the market, investigate the attacks and put preventive measures in place.

They called on security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the attacks, identify and prosecute those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens irrespective of their ethnic background.

The leaders also condemned what they described as incessant attacks and killings of their members, urging authorities to take urgent steps to protect traders, herders and other road users around the market and its access routes.

They appealed to members of the Fulani community to remain calm, exercise restraint, cooperate with security agencies and refrain from taking the law into their own hands while investigations continue.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace, lawfulness and cooperation with security agencies.
