A video widely circulated on social media has led to the arrest of Ibrahima Coly, 28, in Ziguinchor. According to Libération newspaper, Coly calling himself “general” made a series of insulting remarks specifically targeting the Alliance for the Republic (APR), its leader Macky Sall, and the Senegalese army. Faced with the widespread dissemination of the video, the Ziguinchor public prosecutor’s office took up the case. Coly was apprehended by the Ziguinchor police and taken into custody. Libération reported that he has been charged with, among other things, alleged public insults, public indecency via electronic means, and making death threats. The suspect claims to be a security guard at the University of Ziguinchor.
19-year-old Senegalese arrested for murder in the US
A tragedy has shaken the Senegalese community in the United States. Massamba Dieye, a 19-year-old man, was arrested and charged with murder by the Columbus Division of Police in Ohio, USA. He is being prosecuted along with two minors, aged 16 and 17, following a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday, 23rd August, in the Short North neighborhood of Columbus. The incident took place early in the morning, just after 3am. Police officers on patrol heard gunshots and discovered Tiegiaion Clement, a 20-year-old man, critically wounded by gunfire. Rushed to Grant Medical Centre, the victim succumbed to his injuries shortly before 6am. Surveillance video footage played a crucial role. It showed Massamba Dieye walking around the area for several hours with an assault rifle slung over his shoulder.
The Sys at war: Serigne Abou Sy announces a lawsuit against Serigne Moustapha
Some members of the family of former Tivavoune caliph Serigne Cheikh Tidiane Sy Al Maktoum have taken a tougher stance against Serigne Moustapha Sy, the eldest son of the late caliph. Speaking on the “RFM Matin” show on Radio Futurs Médias (RFM), Serigne Abou Sy, a son of the late religious leader, announced his intention to file a lawsuit against his brother the spiritual leader of the Moustarchidines Wal Moustarchidaty movement and the PUR political party.
“We will file a lawsuit against Serigne Moustapha Sy. Let justice be done,” Serigne Abou announced without giving details. He claimed claimed that President Diomaye Faye financed of the gamou celebration held at the Tivaouane racetrack under the auspices of Serigne Moustapha. Serigne Moustapha caused a furore last week when he told his followers that he blocked PM Ousmane Sonko from visiting him and went on to thank President Faye for doing “what he had to do”.
Ziguinchor youth movement joins Diomaye’s party
Kalilou Danfa, former chairman of the board of directors of the National Laboratory for Analysis and Control at the Ministry of Commerce and former leader of the Jappo ak Assome movement, announced his decision to redirect his political career. Addressing supporters, he explained that this choice stemmed from listening carefully to women, young people, and religious and traditional leaders, who expressed their disappointment and despair in the face of daily hardships. Danfa noted that the residents of Ziguinchor suffer from persistent unemployment, a lack of adequate school infrastructure, limited access to healthcare, mobility hampered by dilapidated roads, and economic insecurity that disproportionately affects women. For him, these realities necessitate a new political direction, centered on supporting youth entrepreneurship, empowering women, improving children’s learning environment, and valuing the voice of every citizen. It is in this context that he announced his support for the movement led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
