Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has taken a different position from some of his ex-teammates over the possibility of Manchester City being stripped of Premier League titles.

The Premier League released a statement on Tuesday saying Manchester City committed serious breaches during a nine-season period between 2009/10 and 2017/18.

The potential sanctions, according to reports, could range from point deduction, transfer ban and the removal of titles won during the period in question. The possibility has also raised questions over whether the titles would be declared void or awarded retrospectively to other clubs.

While former United captain Wayne Rooney has said he would not want retrospective winners’ medals, Scholes took a contrasting view.

“Keep hearing ex-teammates say they want trophies taken off them, but they don’t want their medals… f*** that, I’m a greedy b******, I want my medal,” Scholes wrote on his Instagram story on Saturday.

If second-placed teams were eventually awarded the titles, Manchester United could receive three additional Premier League honours from 2012, 2018 and 2021. Liverpool could also be awarded three titles under that scenario, while Arsenal could gain two, for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Manchester City have denied wrongdoing and appealed the commission’s findings.
