Former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has reminded political leaders that controlling many states does not guarantee victory in a presidential election, citing former President Goodluck Jonathan’s defeat in 2015.
”Let me call on the people, especially those who are bragging that they have governors. They have over 30 governors. Many of these people have no experience, or they won’t forget history.” Kwankwaso said at a political gathering at Port Harcourt on Thursday
Kwankwaso, who also recalled his own defeat in the 2003 governorship election in Kano State, said political incumbency and control of government structures could not prevent an unpopular administration from losing at the polls.
“I lost the election,” Kwankwaso said, recalling his 2003 experience, before adding that “in 2015, the same wind came. Jonathan was the president. The sitting president lost the election.”
Kwankwaso argued that elections were ultimately determined by voters and their perception of government performance, rather than simply by the number of governors or political structures controlled by a party.
He also criticised what he described as poor governance, economic hardship and insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria, saying these issues could influence voters when they make decisions at the ballot box.
According to him, Nigerians facing hunger, declining purchasing power, poor infrastructure, insecurity and difficulties accessing education and healthcare have the democratic power to change their government.
“The masses have an opportunity to change the government if they so want,” Kwankwaso said.
He urged voters to see the 2027 election as a decision about their future, saying the election would determine issues including jobs, prosperity and freedom.
“What’s truly on the ballot in the 2027 election is Nigeria. The future of Nigeria is on the ballot,” he said.
