Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assenting to laws establishing the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, and the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh, describing the development as a major milestone that will transform Delta South.
Joel-Onowakpo, who represents Delta South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, spoke after accompanying the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on a visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The senator said he used the meeting to personally thank the President for giving legal backing to the two institutions, which he described as strategic investments in the future of the people of Delta South and the Niger Delta.
According to him, the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, will strengthen maritime education, research, innovation and human-capital development while positioning Delta South as a major hub in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
He said the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh, would equally expand access to specialised healthcare, reduce the burden of residents travelling outside the senatorial district for tertiary medical services and create opportunities for employment, medical training and investment.
“These are not just institutions; they are strategic investments in the future of our people and our communities,” Joel-Onowakpo said.
He added that the enactment of the two laws demonstrated what could be achieved through purposeful representation, constructive engagement and strong collaboration between the Executive and Legislature.
The senator, who is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Senator Akpabio for their support in advancing initiatives that would deliver tangible benefits to the people of Delta South.
“I used the opportunity to thank Mr. President for signing into law the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, and the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh, in Delta South Senatorial District.
“I am deeply grateful to Mr. President and the uncommon President of the Senate for all the support they have given me in the discharge of my responsibilities as Senator representing Delta South in the 10th Assembly,” he said.
Joel-Onowakpo assured his constituents that he would continue to pursue federal projects, legislation and interventions capable of attracting investment, creating jobs, improving healthcare and expanding educational opportunities across the senatorial district.
He said the two institutions would further strengthen Delta South’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s maritime, education and healthcare sectors, while bringing greater federal presence and opportunities to the area.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that his representation translates into tangible improvements in the lives of the people, adding that he would continue to work with relevant authorities to attract more development projects to Delta South.
He concluded by thanking President Tinubu and Senator Akpabio for their support, saying, “God bless Mr. President and God bless the uncommon President of the Senate for all the support they have given to me and the people of Delta South.”
