The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) says the name ‘Mary Habila’ does not appear on the database of registered physiotherapists following verification through the appropriate regulatory channels.
The clarification followed public interest in Habila’s professional status, with the Society maintaining that only official regulatory records can establish whether a person belongs to a regulated profession.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the NSP Public Relations Team, in which the Society’s President, Dr. Felix Odusanya, said the verification was carried out before the clarification was released.
“Following verification through the appropriate regulatory channels, the name ‘Mary Habila,’ as stated, does not appear on the database of registered physiotherapists,” the statement read.
Odusanya said the development highlighted the need for public officials, particularly those occupying the highest levels of government, to exercise due diligence before presenting or identifying individuals with regulated professions.
“Public office carries with it a responsibility to ensure that information placed before Nigerians is accurate and verifiable,” Odusanya said.
He said professional identity should be determined through the appropriate regulatory process rather than assumptions, public perception or unverified claims.
“Professional identity is not a matter of assumption or public perception; it is a matter of verifiable fact. Where questions arise, they should be resolved through the appropriate regulatory processes, not through speculation or unverified claims,” he added.
The Society expressed the hope that the clarification would guide subsequent public discussions and reinforce respect for the integrity of regulated professions.
“We trust that this clarification will guide subsequent discussions and remind all stakeholders that the integrity of regulated professions must be respected. The public deserves accuracy, and professionals deserve to have their qualifications and identities represented truthfully,” the NSP President said.
The Society also urged Nigerians not to lose sight of the tragedy surrounding Habila’s death, despite the clarification over her professional status.
“Finally, while it is important to establish the facts, we must not lose sight of the human tragedy at the heart of this matter. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased, and pray that her soul rests in perfect peace. May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the statement added.
