Aleke\u003C\u002Fstrong> in Abuja \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, senior serving and retired military officers, course mates, family members and friends yesterday paid glowing tributes to the late Commodore Bethel Chukwuma Adogu, who died after a brief illness.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Speaking at a night of tributes held in honour of late Commodore Adogu (rtd) at the Anglican Church of Redemption, Admiralty Estate, Navy Town, Asokoro, the Naval Chief described the deceased as a mentor to many officers and a highly respected figure in the Nigerian Navy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Represented by the Director of Veterans Affairs at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Raheem Taofeek, the Naval Chief said the death of Commodore Adogu had come as a shock to the Nigerian Navy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “He served meritoriously in the Nigerian Navy and was a mentor to many officers. He was a highly professional naval engineer who was deeply devoted to his job.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Beyond discharging his own duties, he mentored younger officers and ensured they were well equipped to carry out their responsibilities, particularly in maintaining platforms in the Nigerian Navy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“His passing is a shock, but we are comforted by the fact that his legacy lives on. I was a very young officer when he retired, and many engineers have benefited from his wealth of experience and his humanity.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Naval Chief assured the family that the late officer would be accorded full military honours at his hometown in Anambra State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He further said, “By the special grace of God, he will be accorded full military honours at his burial in his hometown in Anambra State on the 16th. The burial party is already making preparations, and the Chief of the Naval Staff has ensured that everything is in place for a befitting burial.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The late Commodore Adogu’s course mate and former Director of Naval Education, Commodore Amatere K (rtd), also paid tribute to the deceased, recalling their time together at the Nigerian Naval College.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “He was a member of my course at the Nigerian Naval College. We were 52 officers who joined the Nigerian Navy at the same time, and he was number one on the nominal roll. We fondly called him ‘DO-1’, meaning Direct Officer Number One. I was the last person to report, so I was number last.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The retired director described Adogu as a strong and athletic man, built like a mini-tank, who was never afraid to speak his mind and stood firmly by his convictions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In military training, being so outspoken can be challenging because trainees are expected to be meek and submissive so they can be moulded. However, he was never afraid to express his views, and he often found himself serving punishment, sometimes on behalf of all of us.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“He was also very generous and self-sacrificing, sometimes putting our comfort ahead of his own,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The deceased’s first daughter, Ms Chidiebere Adogu, said she would miss her father’s generosity and kind-hearted nature.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She said, “I will miss his kind nature and generosity. I miss the fact that he could be so kind to people, sometimes even to his own detriment. Most of all, I simply miss having him here with us. I miss all of him.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“It is unfortunate that death has taken him from us, but what gives me solace is knowing that every journey in this life must eventually come to an debunked a viral social media post claiming that more than 100 civilians, 10 soldiers and a Mobile Police officer were killed in an alleged attack on a community in Sokoto State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The claim, published by a Facebook page (Hausaland Magazine) on October 5, 2026, alleged that armed men attacked a community identified as “Garin Gobir Gindin,” killing more than 100 civilians and security personnel, while kidnapping several others.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post, which described the alleged incident as a “genocide” and a “war on Hausa,” attributed the attack to “Fulani terrorists” and claimed that the death toll was rising.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The viral post included an image showing several motionless individuals, some dressed in military-style clothing and others in civilian attire.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also attracted comments from social media users who appeared to accept and amplify the allegations, with some making inflammatory statements targeting ethnic groups.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, security authorities have denied that any such attack occurred in the state as there was no record of a community known as “Garin Gobir Gindin.”\u003Cbr>Investigation identified a date discrepancy in the post while the publication claimed the attack occurred on Tuesday, October 5, 2026, that date fell on a Monday.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, dismissed the allegation, saying, “There was no such attack involving the reported mass casualties in the state.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ahmed Rufa’i, debunked the claim, saying, “This incident did not occur within Sokoto.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verified security reports across the North-West also found no mass-casualty incident matching the description circulated by Hausaland Magazine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigations, however, identified a separate attack on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in Ungushi village, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where bandits reportedly killed two people and injured another. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State says negative public perceptions of the military and other security agencies sometimes discourage young people from joining the services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soludo spoke on Friday at the memorial service for the late Lt.-Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor (rtd.) at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the exemplary lives of officers such as Obiakor could inspire younger generations to embrace military service and other forms of national service.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governor urged community leaders and elders to maintain close relationships with their people and serve as role models for younger generations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We must multitask and become the villager as a way of inspiring and motivating the younger ones,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soludo described Obiakor as an illustrious son of Anambra whose distinguished military career and international peacekeeping service brought honour to Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We have come to celebrate the life of one of our best,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He described the late general as “Anambra’s export to Nigeria and the world”, noting his global service in promoting peace and maintaining law and order.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Soludo stressed that an individual’s greatest achievement lay in the positive impact made on their immediate community.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The impact on the community is the most important impact; his people were able to testify that he was good,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, expressed condolences to the Obiakor family and joined people of Anambra and Nigeria in mourning the late officer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oluyede was represented by Maj.-Gen. Tariweriye Gagariga, Director-General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He described Obiakor as a decorated veteran whose distinguished service brought honour and dignity to the Nigerian Armed Forces.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, the deceased’s son, Mr Nonso Obiakor, reflected on his father’s life, highlighting his discipline, international peacekeeping commitment and dedication to humanity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memorial service attracted family members, senior military officers, government officials and other mourners celebrating Obiakor’s contributions to Anambra, Nigeria and the international community.
