Motorist escapes death as train collides with car in Lagos

Daily Post 42 minutes 2 mins read

A 55-year-old motorist has escaped without injury after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos State.

The incident involved a train heading towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT, which sustained extensive damage in the collision.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, said its officials, working alongside security personnel, rescued the driver and cleared the damaged vehicle from the railway track, enabling the train to continue its journey.

Despite the clearance, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis following the incident.

LASTMA said the wrecked vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel to facilitate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the officials and security personnel for their swift response to the incident.

He said their coordinated efforts highlighted the importance of cooperation among relevant agencies when handling emergencies involving railway operations and adjoining roads.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to remain vigilant when approaching railway crossings and designated train routes, warning them against attempting to cross tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion.

He stressed that “reckless disregard for railway safety protocols could precipitate devastating and irreversible consequences”.

LASTMA also called on motorists and other road users to obey established traffic rules and railway safety regulations.

The agency emphasised that “the preservation of human life must remain paramount in all road-use decisions”, adding that responsible driving and strict compliance with safety instructions were essential to preventing avoidable collisions.
