Rapper Ms Jorji has opened up about a painful experience from her childhood, revealing that her father allegedly segxwally abused her for seven years, from when she was about 11 until she turned 18.
Speaking during a discussion, the rapper expressed concern over what she described as the widespread prevalence of segxwal abuse in Nigeria, particularly the tendency of families to protect their reputations rather than stand up for victims.
“My father molested me all through my childhood,” she said, recounting the abuse she alleged she endured for seven years.
Ms Jorji also claimed that sexual abuse was common among women she knew, including people who worked for her. According to her, alleged perpetrators included fathers, brothers, pastors and neighbours.
“There is an epidemic that is going on in our country,” she said, calling attention to what she believes is a deeply troubling problem that continues to affect many women.
The rapper further recounted the case of a female friend who was allegedly raped in Nigeria about three months ago. She said she spent approximately ₦1 million to get the police to begin investigating the matter, but the case remained unresolved after the suspect reportedly fled.
Beyond the alleged incidents themselves, Ms Jorji strongly criticised the culture of silence surrounding sexual abuse, particularly when the accused person is a family member.
Reflecting on her own experience, she said her family was more concerned about protecting her father and preserving the family’s image than confronting the alleged abuse.
“Protect my father, protect the image of the family,” she recalled.
According to her, many families worry more about what people will say than about securing justice for victims.
She argued that this misplaced concern for public opinion allows alleged perpetrators to escape accountability and potentially continue harming others.
“The truth is that is the reason why a lot of these predators exist,” she said, stressing that protecting a family’s reputation should never come at the expense of a victim’s safety and well-being.
Ms Jorji also challenged the idea that family relationships must be maintained simply because people share the same blood.
She emphasised that genuine family should be defined by love, support and protection, rather than biological connections alone.
“Family is not about blood. Family is the people who want the best for you and you can create family,” she stated.
She concluded by reminding people that being born into a family does not mean they must remain connected to relatives who hurt them or fail to protect them.
“Just because you’re born into a family does not mean that’s where you’re supposed to stay,” she said.
