Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has blamed the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for the death of his mother, saying the rising cost of medication made it increasingly difficult for him to provide the healthcare she needed.
Speaking during an interview, Amaechi said his mother was in good health before Tinubu assumed office and argued that her death should not simply be attributed to old age.
“My mother was healthy!” the former governor declared, explaining that after the change in government, the cost of purchasing her medications became increasingly difficult to bear.
When the interviewer pointed out that Amaechi’s mother had lived to an advanced age and questioned whether the responsibility of caring for her rested entirely on him, the former governor pushed back, insisting that he had done everything within his means to provide for her.
According to Amaechi, the sharp increase in the cost of living has placed enormous pressure on families across the country, with many Nigerians struggling to afford essential medicines and access adequate healthcare.
He further argued that Nigeria’s dependence on imported pharmaceutical products had contributed to the rising cost of drugs. In support of his position, Amaechi cited figures he attributed to the National Bureau of Statistics, claiming that Nigeria spent about ₦200 billion on drug imports in the last quarter, while approximately 40 per cent of finished goods were imported.
