Initial recovery attempts using small boats and canoes were reportedly inadequate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only fragments of the aircraft had been recovered as of the time of filing this report.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Chief orders comprehensive probe\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aneke said he had directed the Superintendent of Safety and Evaluation to assemble a high-level team comprising military and civilian safety experts to investigate the crash.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I have informed my Superintendent of Safety and Evaluation to come up with a high-level delegation comprising of both military and civilian safety experts, NTSB, Accident and Emergency Management Board, retired senior officers, experienced Air Force officers, to sit down and get to the bottom of what happened,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Chief urged members of the public to avoid speculation on the cause of the crash until the investigation was concluded.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“This is not the time to start speculating, and I plead with you, general public. We’ve lost people who are fighting for the nation,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The best we can do for them is to be a little bit patient and let those who are the specialists get to the bottom of what has happened.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aneke said aviation safety remained a priority for the Nigerian Air Force, adding that the service would leave no stone unturned in determining what led to the accident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It’s a very big loss, and no amount of words we put can bring so-called understanding to those who have lost. I myself have grieved, so I understand how it feels,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘Families will get necessary support’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chief of the Air Staff assured the families of the deceased that the Nigerian Air Force would provide the necessary assistance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The Nigerian Air Force is putting everything possible to ensure that the families get the necessary support they need,” Aneke said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He commended the Ondo State Government and residents of Igbokoda for their response to the disaster.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I have inspected the crash site. I want to use this opportunity to thank first the good people of Ondo State and our governor. They have committed resources, time and energy,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The locals here, the residents here, were the first responders. I’ve been briefed by the commander of the Navy here.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Words cannot describe how we Nigerians come together when things go south.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘I knew everyone on board’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While sympathising with the families of the victims, Aneke said the tragedy was particularly painful to him because he personally knew those on board.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“On behalf of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and also officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, I want to first express our deep sorrow and condolence to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I basically knew everyone on that flight. I’ve flown on this aeroplane. My family has flown on this aeroplane. has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, warning against speculation over the cause of the tragedy until aviation safety experts complete their inquiry.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aneke, who visited the crash site yesterday as recovery operations continued, said the investigation would involve military and civilian aviation safety experts, including representatives of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), accident and emergency management authorities, retired senior military officers, and experienced Air Force personnel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The air force chief, who said he personally knew all the occupants of the ill-fated aircraft, described the crash as a devastating loss to the military and the families of the victims.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He assured the bereaved families that the Nigerian armed forces would provide the necessary support.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aneke said, “I basically knew everyone on that flight. I’ve flown on this aeroplane. My family has flown on this aeroplane. I know each of the crew personally.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He described the deceased crew members as “highly trained, professional and intelligent officers”, saying their sacrifice in the service of the country must be honoured.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The best we can do is to honour the sacrifice they have put in,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aneke, who said his visit was primarily to assess the welfare of those affected and ensure accountability, said the air force would not leave any stone unturned in determining what caused the accident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated, “I had informed my Superintendent of Safety and Evaluation to come up with a high-level delegation comprising both military and civilian safety experts, NTSB, Accident and Emergency Management Board, retired senior officers and experienced Air Force officers, to sit down and get to the bottom of what happened.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aneke urged the public to resist the temptation to draw conclusions about the crash before the investigation was completed, stressing that aviation accidents require specialised technical examination.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “This is not the time to start speculating, and I plead with you, the general public. We’ve lost people who are fighting for the nation. The best we can do for them is to be a little bit patient and let those who are the specialists get to the bottom of what has happened.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said the air force placed a high premium on safety, adding that its operational environment requires constant vigilance because increased aviation activities could also increase the possibility of incidents.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated, “If you know the aviation environment, you understand that the more activities you have, the more likelihood you have of incidents like this. We in the air force, we leave no stone unturned. When it comes to safety, everything is ensured.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“It’s a very big loss, and no amount of words we put can bring so-called understanding to those who have lost. I understand how it feels.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The Nigerian Air Force is putting everything possible to ensure that the families get the necessary support they need.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The chief of air staff also commended Ondo State Government and Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for committing resources and personnel to the recovery operation. He said the response demonstrated the importance of cooperation between government agencies, the military, and local communities during emergencies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aneke said, “I have inspected the crash cycle programme zero, and I want to use this opportunity to thank, first, the good people of Ondo State and our governor. They have committed resources, time and energy.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He reserved particular praise for residents of Igbokoda, who he said were among the first responders after the aircraft went down.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated, “The locals here, the residents here, were the first responders. I’ve been briefed by the commander of the navy here. We call it the flight data recorder (FDR), and another component close to it, the cockpit voice recorder (CVR).”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recorders are expected to provide crucial evidence to help investigators reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments and determine the factors that led to the crash.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aviation experts also said recovering and analysing the devices could provide important clues to the cause of the accident, although their findings would need to be assessed alongside other evidence from the wreckage and crash site.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the experts, Mr Olugbenga Afolabi, said the recorders were among the critical components investigators would be looking for.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the flight data recorder captured information about an aircraft’s performance and flight parameters, while the cockpit voice recorder preserved cockpit conversations, alarms and other sounds that could help investigators understand the crew’s actions before the crash.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Nigerian Navy has deployed specialised sonar equipment to locate the submerged aircraft as recovery operations continue.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, directed the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Department to deploy personnel and advanced sonar-scanning equipment to obtain an underwater picture of the crash site.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abbas said the deployment became necessary because of the swamp’s high turbidity, which had made underwater visibility extremely difficult.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commanding Officer of the Officers’ Mess at the Forward Operating Base, Igbokoda, Navy Captain Andy Alemongwa, who received the personnel, said the sonar survey would help map the crash site and establish the precise location of the submerged aircraft.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alemongwa explained that the information would guide divers and other technical personnel involved in the recovery operation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operation is also being supported by Nigerian Navy divers and NAF drone pilots conducting searches across the surrounding mangrove and forested areas, he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, and the Air Officer Commanding, Logistics Command, NAF, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdul Suleh, have also visited the crash site.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Chief: We’ll get to bottom of crash\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, assured Nigerians that the military would conduct a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and prevent a recurrence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aneke, who appealed to the public to avoid speculation, said a high-level team comprising military and civilian aviation safety experts had been constituted to investigate the incident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the team would include safety specialists, representatives of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the Accident Investigation Bureau, emergency management agencies, retired senior military officers and experienced NAF personnel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the team would examine the circumstances of the crash and establish what went wrong.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I have inspected the crash site, and I want to use this opportunity to thank the good people of Ondo State and our governor. They have committed resources, time and energy,” Aneke said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I had informed my Superintendent of Safety and Evaluation to come up with a high-level delegation comprising both military and civilian safety experts, the NTSB, Accident and Emergency Management Board, retired senior officers and experienced Air Force officers, to sit down and get to the bottom of what happened,” he added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aneke urged Nigerians to allow specialists to complete their investigation, describing the deaths of the personnel as a tragedy for the armed forces and the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“This is not the time to start speculating, and I plead with the general public. We’ve lost people who are fighting for the nation.
