Nasarawa Assembly probes multiple taxation as NSIRS calls for stronger revenue coordination

Daily Post 11 minutes 2 mins read

The Nasarawa State Internal Revenue Service, NSIRS, has called for stronger collaboration among relevant stakeholders to address complaints of multiple taxation and improve revenue administration across the state.

The Executive Chairman of NSIRS, Alhaji Ibrahim Sarki Adamu, made the call during the inaugural sitting of an ad-hoc committee of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly investigating allegations of multiple taxation and irregularities in revenue collection.

The committee was established following a matter of public importance raised by Hon. Daniel Oga Ogazi, who represents Kokona East Constituency.

Speaking at the sitting, the committee chairman and Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Revenue, Hon. Hudu A. Hudu, said the panel would investigate complaints of multiple taxation, establish the number of private revenue consultants engaged by NSIRS and examine the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax obligations of Federal Capital Territory workers residing in Nasarawa State.

He stated that the committee would also examine other concerns relating to revenue administration as part of efforts to ensure transparency, accountability and compliance with relevant tax laws.

Hudu expressed confidence in the leadership of NSIRS, assuring that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly and impartially in the overall interest of the state.

Adamu, in his response, commended the lawmakers for initiating the inquiry and pledged the service's full cooperation with the committee.

He stressed that effective revenue administration required collective efforts to identify untapped revenue sources, eliminate leakages and ensure that all legally collectible revenues were properly accounted for.

The NSIRS chairman also stated the need for transparency, accountability and fairness in dealing with taxpayers, noting that improved coordination among stakeholders was essential to strengthening the state’s revenue system.

Other lawmakers present at the sitting were Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, Hon. Abel Bala Yakubu and Hon. Saidu Musa Gude.

The committee has directed NSIRS to submit a formal response to its terms of reference within one week to enable further legislative action.
