The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the reported obstruction of its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, from accessing Yelwata community in Benue to visit victims of recent killings.
The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from entering the community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to Gov. of Benue, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
The party described the incident as troubling, saying Obi’s planned visit was intended to enable him to mourn with affected families, offer solidarity and listen to victims.
According to the statement, Obi said he arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting victims and families affected by the killings in Yelwata.
He said his convoy was stopped from proceeding to the community by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
Obi said he visited Benue not for political purposes but to mourn with the affected families and offer solidarity at a difficult time.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” he was quoted as saying.
The NDC said Benue residents and Nigerians deserved to live peacefully, travel safely and farm their lands without fear.
It also called on the Benue Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens and leaders visiting communities affected by violence.
The party said although access to Yelwata was denied, its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the entire community.
The NDC said it would continue to advocate the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country. (NAN)
