New sanctions by Canada, Russia affect hundreds of targets

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

Hundreds of people and organizations are listed in the latest restrictive measures imposed by the governments of Canada and Russia over the past 24 hours.

On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s defence industry, energy revenues, and shadow fleet, among others.

More than 162 individuals, entities, and vessels will be affected. “We’re keeping the pressure on Russia to negotiate peace—a just and lasting peace—for Ukraine and Europe,” Carney noted.

More than 3,000 individuals and entities, as well as 600 vessels have now been targeted in Ottawa’s punitive actions against Moscow in recent months.

In a tit-for-tat move, Russia declared its own sanctions, publishing a categorised compilation of 103 Canadian nationals it stated are barred from its territory.

The list includes Members of the Parliament (Senate), MPs (House of Commons), Secretaries of State, Parliamentary secretaries to Ministers/Secretaries of State, and MPs without cabinet posts.

Others are Marie Annabelle Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, Christopher William Westdal, ex-Ambassador to Russia and Ukraine, and Hillel Neuer, Head of United Nations Watch.

Moscow said the citizens—mostly within the Canadian parliament—have been working against Russia’s constitutional framework and foreign policy, and supporting the confiscation of state assets.

The Foreign Ministry also chided the Carney administration for continuing the policy line as set by the Justin Trudeau government to support “the neo-Nazi authorities in Kiev.”
