NGX investors lose whopping N3.8 trillion after Tinubu visit

Investors in the Nigerian Exchange Limited, NGX, recorded a massive loss of N3.8 trillion in four trading sessions, ending the week on a bearish note after the management paid a visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Data from the NGX showed that from Tuesday to Friday, the Nigerian stock market continued its decline, shedding a total of N3.8 trillion.

Accordingly, the NGX shed N2.932 trillion on Tuesday and Wednesday, N613 billion on Thursday and N257 billion on Friday.

During Friday’s trading, data from the NGX showed that market capitalisation declined by 0.16 per cent to N156.623 trillion, from N156.880 trillion at the previous close.

Also, the All-Share Index (ASI) dipped, shedding 398.18 points, or 0.16 per cent, to close at 242,619.20, compared with the 243,017.38 recorded on Thursday.

Friday’s downward performance was driven by sell-offs in stocks such as Fortis Global Insurance, Omatek Ventures, John Holt, RT Briscoe and Dangote Sugar, alongside 25 other decliners.

Fortis Global Insurance led the losers’ chart, declining by 9.31 per cent, while International Energy Insurance led the gainers’ chart with a 9.92 per cent increase, settling at N5.32.

During Friday’s trading, market activity weakened, with total volume traded declining by 66.64 per cent to 1.41 billion shares, valued at N45.31 billion, across 39,134 deals.

Fortis Global Insurance recorded the highest volume, with 874.08 million shares traded, accounting for 61.83 per cent of the total volume.

MTN Nigeria recorded the highest value traded at N31.37 billion, representing 69.24 per cent of the total value traded on Friday.

DAILY POST reports that on August 6, 2026, the Board and Management of the Nigerian Exchange Group, led by its Chairman, Dr Umaru Kwairanga, and Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Temi Popoola, led a delegation on a visit to President Tinubu.

The President hailed the NGX reforms and assured that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited would be listed on the Nigerian stock market.
