The Niger State Government has presented ₦5 million to each of the families of the 37 artisanal miners who died in the recent mining tragedy in the state, while 32 survivors received ₦2 million each as support.

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State presented the cheques to the Emir of Minna, Umar Bahago, at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Minna.

Bago said the gesture was aimed at supporting the affected families and survivors as well as cushioning the economic impact of the tragedy on them.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the financial support to venture into other legitimate means of livelihood, while advising them to desist from engaging in unsafe and unprofessional mining activities.

The governor also disclosed that his administration had directed the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, to establish schools in relevant communities to encourage children to enrol in school rather than risk their lives in artisanal mining.

Bago expressed appreciation to the families of the deceased and the survivors for their patience and perseverance following the tragedy.

He also commended the Emir of Minna, Umar Faruk Bahago, for his efforts in promoting peace within his domain and for his role in counselling and supporting the affected families.

The governor further appreciated the monarch for his continued support to his administration.

Responding on behalf of the families of the deceased and the survivors, Bahago expressed appreciation to the governor for the gesture.

He assured that the Minna Emirate would ensure that the funds are distributed to the rightful beneficiaries.

FG Rolls Out Support Package

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has announced a ₦250 million support package for the families of the victims.

Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the support on Monday during a condolence visit to the Niger State Government and the people of the state over the deaths.

He described the incident as unfortunate, saying the Federal Government shares in the pain of the bereaved families and remains committed to protecting every Nigerian without distinction.
